I almost never use bonemeal except for at the very beginning. Does this mean I am to expect this won't effect me what-so-ever with all the "Murder Skeletons" out there?
Whew! And here I thought I was going to starve in my Desert, Plains, or Tundra biome on Hardcore Mode at the very beginning of a Brand New Map! WHAT A RELIEF IT IS TO REALIZE HOW WRONG I TRULY WAS!!!
Starting out should be hard. And being in those biomes are irrelevant once you get what you need to start a farm.
I dont really like the new bone meal nerf. But seeing as you can now have fully automatic farms like in Tekkit or FTB. I see why its nerfed. The only thing you cannot automate is planting the crop. Unless your growing sugar reeds, pumpkins, or melons.
This nerf is highly unnecessary. Using bonemeal is entirely optional and if people thought it was overpowered then they shouldn't use it. Now this nerf is just an annoying pain in the neck. This doesn't add substantial difficulty that would enhance the survival aspect, this is just a plain annoyance. I say make bones give bonemeal in a 1:1 ratio and maybe keep the nerf for trees/mushrooms but don't you dare touch nerf bonemeal on crops.

If they added bone meal to affect Sugar Cane 'm pretty sure everyone would be exicted and not care.
Plus if your this upset by it, go make a skelton grinder. Jeez. If you want to see hard survival, go on 2b2t sometime with nothing at spawn.

Right, because the creator of a game shouldn't have to fix mild design flaws, or attempt to balance new features that interact with existing ones. The consumer should, instead, be forced to sidestep them at their own discretion.
But don't you guys think Bonemeal was nerfed too much that it's now underpowered? I think it is much better to keep the old ways and let it be a 1:1 ratio for bones for bonemeal instead of 1:3.
1 or 2 bonemeal for a tree, well I don't care either way. 1 bonemeal isn't a significant difference and trees are everywhere. You kill 1 skeleton and you still have more than enough bonemeal.
I just think the 7 bonemeal for 1 wheat is ridiculous. Getting 7 bonemeal, for me isn't the issue - that's quite easy. I just don't want to be having to go spam click wheat. I usually make a large wheat farm anyway, but sometimes I want a 1/2 stack of wheat quickly to breed animals, or to head out on a mining trip that I did didn't plan on doing until now.
I think the 1:1 ratio like you suggested would be a better solution. I agree that bonemeal is OP, but the problem is the large amounts of bonemeal you are able to easily get. Not how little you have to use. After not too long I always have at least 1 double chest full of bones - NOT bonemeal. I will have more than enough bonemeal to spam click my wheat farm 7 times and more. I just want a solution where there's no spam clicking wheat - I'm fine with the nerf.
Was Bonemeal nerfed when just used on grass to spawn flowers and whatnot? That's pretty much all I used it for if I found myself in a biome with very little weeds to break for seeds.
Problem isn't with speed. Problem is with fresh spawns where bone meal is a godsend, giving a starving and dying adventure the energy to survive the first night, if they can brave a tussle with a skeleton. The problem is that is no longer worth using at all for survival on the first few days, and past that, you should have enough meat / wheat planted by then that this "booster" is no longer needed.
I've never actually used bonemeal for getting crops I always rely on mass eradication of animals in my first few days [hardcore of course] then once I've gathered enough resources I move on and start being eco friendly, I make a farm, I stabilize the animal population etc. etc. The only thing I really use bonemeal for is making a dark room and spamming the roof for flowers and seeds. Besides that I had no purpose for it. But now that it can be dispensed I feel like this will be a really cool update.
As I said before I never really used it so I don't know if the whole "21 bonemeal for 1 bread. ;(" thing is actually a big deal. Although I do find it funny that wheat takes 7 bonemeal, 2.3 bones, whilst a tree takes 2 bonemeal, 2/3 bones. Of course this is just a snapshot and come next week I'm sure it will be something along the lines of 3 meal for 1 wheat, sounds fair to me.

Put a comparator next to a dispensor filled with bonemeal facing a crop. The comparators give out constant redstone updates and there has been a longstanding bug with dispensors [I suppose you'd call it a feature at this point] and if you power the dispensor you will have a rapid pulse dispensor.
Using One dispensor will not get you any "faster" growth, you will still have to wait out the 1.3 seconds between the bonemeal "spam". But you don't actually have to click or hold your mouse. If you have 5 dispensors facing into a crop [it doesn't work on the bottom, I tried. ;(] You can have wheat within ~0.2 seconds. If you want to know more you can look at the video I posted earlier.

No, it still takes 1 Bone Meal to instantly grow Tall Grass and Flowers I believe.

Not a fan. I only ever use bone meal in desperate situations, and I usually don't have more than one bone, at those times. By the time I have enough bones, when you can argue in favor of a nerf, I have farms and food to feed a nation. If they need to nerf, give one bone meal per bone.

When it's such a minor thing that doesn't break the game, then yes.
It's no different than how some people prefer monster grinders for exp (as it's faster) and others prefer to get exp by just killing mobs because they personally feel it's how the game should be played.
The game is meant to give you options, you know. That's what a sandbox game is.
When I play peaceful (which I've been doing a lot lately), I don't really mind not getting bonemeal as I feel it's something I should earn.
It haves been a long time since i last used bone meal , and if i desesperately need food , i always have some stored or even better , i craft a stone sword and i go hunting.
But i remember a weird glitch that caused crops to grow at a painfully slow rate. I still don't know why that was happening , but during that time i had to use bone meal or my Steve would starve , so i understand the point of the people saying it was a bit extreme.
I don't like that it was nerfed for the sake of easier automation , but this is Mojang , they think that mixing enchantments and obtaining devices with AI without any serious cost is balanced. I don't like the way the development is taking but well , it is their game.
Instantly growing crops with bonemeal is usually only something I would do to start off a world... but after a couple game days I typically have no need for bonemeal other than as a color dye because my plot of land provides an army's worth after each regular growth cycle
It wouldn't bother me even if Instead the nerf was changed to bonemeal giving a certain crop 50% increased chance of advancing to the next growth stage up to being fully grown and increased the chances of a sapling springing up into an actual tree.
Instant anything just doesn't seem right you know...
I've always used it to jump start a farm for a bit of bread on the first night / getting more seeds for breeding cattle (my staple food source)
I've been noticing the whole argument for the nerf is "Its neater this way!" and seems to come from people who already have stores of food, cattle farms, and won't end up using bone meal to begin with, nerfed or not. If you don't want instant wheat, thats cool, but don't make life rough for new spawns just cause you "dislike" a mechanic that you don't even use.
Are you guys kidding me?
You say bones are easy to obtain. What about those of us who don't have or want to make a skeletron grinder? With the nerf this severe, they are pretty much removing the use for bones. It takes away the main point of killing skeletons. Unless you have a looting III sword, you pretty much need a grinder.
It now take SEVEN TIMES as much bonemeal as it used to just for one wheat. Either the nerf needs to be nerfed, or removed entirely.
While I see the appeal in nerfing bonemeal, it doesn't need to be this severe.

There are better ways of nerfing bonemeal so it doesn't become a pain in the neck. It being flawed is just an opinion and I haven't seen lots of topics crying that bonemeal was OP before. I think the only good compromise would be for bones to only give one bonemeal each. Save people the annoyance but help keep it "balanced". Ugh :/ I know this is small to most people but what if Mojang does more things like this to bigger stuff.

But 21 for one measly bread is crazy.

Also dinnerbone said they weren't balanced yet.
Awesome, I've got no thoughts on the matter then, since that's more or less all I used Bonemeal for.
