I loved the Minecart with TNT from last week because it actually felt like it was a device made for sucide bombs and to do a lot of damage. But now they nerfed it so it does not destroy the track. Why would they do that? First of all it makes no sense that the thing the TNT is on is not destoryed. Second, why would you even need to track to survive? Once the TNT blows up, there is nothing left for it to blow up, you'll have to fix the explosion anyway. So what's the point of the feature?
Doesn't matter if you don't like it or if you like it, it's here now so you have to deal with it if you use TNT carts, or just don't use TNT carts.
It's after all a very minor thing. Remember the iron cost would get kind of crazy otherwise. 5 for the cart then some for the rails, not counting any powered rail equivilents for gold costs.

Not really. It kind of felt pointless to me, the way it was at that time. Even ignoring that it couldn't go off the edge of the track (because that was a bug) we still have the fact that... well... what was it good for?
1. if you have a 1x2 tunnel of rail, you often want it to be bigger- a "subway" if you will. Normally, this would require the use of the Pick. And with the previous TNT minecart, it would still require that, because it was useless for that purpose, since it destroyed the track. Now, however, you can place activator tracks along the path with redstone, and send groups of carts one after another to clear more of the tunnel.
Why would they do that?
Give it more purpose. I'm not sure what "suicide attacks" you were envisioning, since you would need an activator rail at the other side anyway (or it to fly off a cliff, which works now but didn't work previously)
First of all it makes no sense that the thing the TNT is on is not destoryed.
It also makes no sense that Minecarts move on tracks at all, given their curious lack of wheels.
Second, why would you even need to track to survive?
For clearing longer passageways, or expanding a "subway". This would be accomplished by using an activator rail at specific locations along the track; each explosion would result in the redstone current for the activator being removed (a torch or lever would be broken off by the explosion) thus the cart could move further along the track. "Destruction" is not the particular purpose of this, but to help replace- and provide an alternative to- the older method involving specially placed TNT that sets off a chain reaction. Doing it in this fashion is more controlled.

Activator rails do not activate TNT if they are unpowered. Explosions break redstone, levers, and torches. After the explosion another TNT cart could pass through harmlessly to a later activator rail rigged in much the same manner.
Please allow me to open my post with this statement: Pure "realism" is not an argument for any game mechanics. As others have said and others will say: Minecraft accurate to real life in all ways would a boring game make.
Personally, I couldn't come up with a single use for the TNT Cart last week. Now, it IS useful. There was absolutely no reason to use a TNT Minecart over a block of TNT except for blowing up heaps of iron from your stockpiles.
Also, according to Dinnerbone's post, you can still make it work the way you want it to work, OP. I can't imagine WHY you'd want to, but you can!
Dinnerbone: I didn't know it worked that way. I couldn't have come up with a better implementation myself. Kudos!
Actually, it could use one small tweak. Do you think that an already-activated TNT-cart could be made to safe-detonate immediately if it goes over a SECOND Activator Rail?

Yup. It only explodes safely if you explode it safely. If you crash it, boom. If you derail it at high speeds, boom. If you blow it up from another explosion (safe or not), boom. If you look at it funny, boom.
Only if you activate it the safe way and make sure it doesn't crash before then, will it detonated in a controlled fashion.
I guess you're right. Sorry for complaining so much.
The reason it was made so the track isn't destroyed is to allow for adventure maps to continue launching TNT carts from the same set of track.

Yes but that feature could be assigned to purely adventure mode.

And if you do need a one time use explosive, why not just use regular tnt?

Unless you missed the person you want to explode and want a reoccuring explosion trap.
No he's not. It's an absurd contrivance. It's another Mojang easy feature.

For adventure maps though, i love it
Imagine a room with railroad tracks criss-crossing just over head. You need to cross the room while tnt minecarts roll on the tracks above, exploding.
Or a bedrock.obsidian room with holes in walls or ceiling, which tnt carts come out of.
THOSE DARN GRIEFERS DON'T NEED ANY ADDITIONAL WEAPONS!
Seriously... of what possible use is a minecart filled with TNT?
It can't be for mining... who would waste the iron on the cart when they can just place the TNT by hand?
So... it can only be for one thing... as an offensive weapon.
All I can envision is a nice peaceful multiplayer town... a fine sunny day... and then... along comes a TNT cart, right down Main Street...
Ugh.
