Is it possible that you have more lag (well, technically it isn't really lag, it is just lower frame rates, but whatever) because your computer is also running a server, instead of just playing on someone else's server? That is what I think a lot of people don't get, in this snapshot you computer is running a server while in single player so you are obviously going to have more lag than even on SMP when you played on somebody else's server. I am VERY sure that Mojang will add an option in later that allows you turn off the server feature, and if you DO turn off the server feature your game will run just like before, I know that for a fact because I turned my internet connection off so when Minecraft started it couldn't connect to the internet so the server feature didn't run and I played single player all fine and dandy, in fact, it ran as well as 1.2.5 with optifine installed >.>
SO GIVE MOJANG SOME TIME TO ACTUALLY DO SOME REAL WORK!
It was lag. Going through creatures and stuff. It didn't seem to happen before, but I could basically phase through every living thing for the brief few minutes I was testing.
Anyway I would normally host my own worlds so I could play them from any PC in the house, so that has nothing to do with it.

All these kids getting their knickers in a bunch about someone calling out Mojang for a potential issue.
Hah, aren't the snapshots supposed to promote discussion about the future of Minecraft? After all, this game was built upon the opinions of people. Without the support of all the people, this game wouldn't be what it is. So if a lot of people are turning around and expressing concern, then why should you try to stop it? Or disregard it as Misinformation?
I'm sure no one has thought of the security issues that could be cause by this? Or the fact that snapshots are supposed to be critisized by the general populous? Otherwise, what the hell is mojang doing by releasing these? Just as a toy for people to play with? I think not.
Personally, I've never experienced such bad lag since the lag spike of death in 1.6 Beta.
If you haven't played the snapshot, don't talk here.
This thread has at last taken a turn for the better! Many are finally playing the snapshot and realizing how terrible this system is.
As for the ****ing retarded 'This is just a snapshot' argument, yeah, it is.
And guess what? It's there to report bugs, not for you to request new features or ask for any to be removed.
We're getting previews of what's to come, and there's nothing we can do about it but report bugs about it.
That's the point I'm getting at, and you all are ineffectively attempting to use it against my post.
This is likely what's going to happen. We'll playing an MMO game from 1.3/1.2.6 onwards.
And that 'Single Player' button you see on the title screen? That'll be a lie from this point.
I prefer to keep my single player worlds, single player.
If I want to use multiplayer, I will press that button labeled 'Multi Player' on the title screen.
Maybe Mojang should put this to better use and have this as an 'easy server hosting' option.
This argument is better than any argument you can attempt to think of, Eternal September of the MCF.

There is discussing and then there is doomsaying. "Remember Performance? Say your Farewells." is not a thread title for a calm discussion. It also assumes that everybody is going to have a bad experience and that is not the case. Some people, including myself have, a better performance with the snapshot. The original thread text was also a little off the wall too.

More doomsaying...
Nobody is forcing you to play with other people, it will be an option when this update is finished. The end product should be in-distinguishable from the current stable SSP and be a huge asset to those who want to share their world with friends.
My recommendation would be to calm down, re-install 1.2.5, have a drink (if you're over 21 which I doubt based on this thread) and then calm down some more. You really seem to be over reacting over nothing here.
I expected the worst, but ran around a field fighting mobs and it was just as easy is the classic single player. Mobs were where my client thought they were and I could kill/defend against each mob type.
Biggest difference I felt was in the multiplayer chunk management. Seems like singleplayer used to load a larger area around you and keep it loaded. The new hybrid seemed to always be loading chunks for me. Maybe they can make bandwidth checks and determine how many chunks the client can handle maintaining around the player.
I haven't played the snapshot since yesterday, because I have a server to administrate that I pay to have hosted, proving I'm at least over 18, proving your argument incorrect.
As for the thread title, it's actually far more calm than just about that of every other thread on this forum. Remember Performance? Say your Farewells.
Is much better than: I ****ING HATE MOJANG!!!!!!!! NOTCH SHOULD BE BETTER AT CODING AND ****!!!!!!!!!
Being half the thread titles of this forum. (Quoting me on that would be a dumbass move in advance, though it's nearly true.)
chill out, Sabinno... you act like mojang doesnt see ANY of the things the minecraft community says. this is minecraft, not... anything else, really.
this feature is only just being put into the game. whats in the snapshot is them experimenting to see what they have to do, in a sense. most if not all of the multiplayer bugs will be fixed with a bit of time.
by the way, your post about the single player button being a lie? sure, its a lie in this snapshot, but what will eventually happen is we will get our SSP back. it will be SSP, but with an "invite player" button added to it. once you invite a player, THEN it makes a switch to SMP.
redoing the minecraft_server thing... no **** theyre going to do that. minecraft servers have always been rather sloppily put together, thats why they have the Bukkit team working to make it nicer.

18+ is still lower then 21 and even 21 doesn't guarantee a mature level head just the ability to have a nice calming drink, unless you are an angry drunk in which case don't have a drink
You are right though about the rage threads but the thread title was still over reacting. You could have just said "Huge performance drop with new snapshot" and discussed it but instead you assumed the worst, posted a title that assumes EVERYbody will have performance drop and pretty much denied that it would ever be fixed before official release.... so Doomsayer

I really think people are miss interpreting this bit. I don't think the game will just switch to SMP when you invite other players because this would completely defeat the entire purpose of this combined functionality. The developers do not want to be programing two games, features in SMP and features in SSP. There will be one game which will be a SSP SMP hybrid where you play on one listen server (although this may be done with a single JAR). We will, hopefully, not be able to tell the difference when this is all said and done. Right now some people do have a performance drop while others have and increase and there are a number of new bugs introduced in the process of this merger. They mojang blog openly states that this snapshot was particularly "experimental" but most people get the snapshot from the forums and they failed to include the entire post from the blog.
Important! This week’s snapshot is extra experimental!

Seems like you want to get so technical:
[21, infinity) is a subset of [18, infinity), thus making your statement "18+ is still lower then 21" partially wrong.
Face it: Running a server and connect to it using a client will always have a decreased performance than running a single player game, guaranteed.
Regardless of how many people support this idea, I still think this change is bizarre, and my support goes to the OP: If I want to play a single player game, I want to keep it single player. Running a server and connect to it defeat the definition of "single" player. Arguing that running a server and connect to it alone by yourself is "single player" is just *beep*.
One last thing: You really need to drop the "doomsayer" thing.
The FPS drop is mostly due to the fact my computer, for some reason, lags a bit when receiving packets at slow speeds.
And my dl/ul speed is slow. That brings up another issue.
When you're not connected to the internet, no Minecraft.
If you have a bad internet connection, you can time out. In single player.
If you play a hardcore world and die, you can't ever again play any single player worlds unless you edit /server/banned-players.txt .
If you absolutely must be logged into Minecraft.net and have connection at all times to play Minecraft in any way, say goodbye to a huge portion of our userbase.
I'm not exaggerating there. Do you know how many brilliant redstone developers, for example, play Minecraft offline all the time because they haven't registered?
Do you know how many people must, like me quite often, play Minecraft offline?

The work has not been completed yet, though, but a snapshot’s a snapshot.
it's a snapshot and an admittedly incomplete snapshot at that. They are not going to trade off offline mode just to merge SSP and SMP, they are already going to fix the loss of the pause feature and the rest of the bugs this incomplete merge has brought about.
You are also wrong about staying connected to minecraft.net in order to play. I have a keyboard shortcut to disable my NIC, I hit the key, lo and behold I am still playing the snapshot. I was even able to log in in offline mode and load my world. The only thing I noticed while offline was I didn't load my player config file and I spawned fresh at spawn. I then created a new hard core world, and killed myself and was able to load another game no problem without having to edit anything... Do you even test these things now before you post this crap?

man, +rep to you. though i have a hunch that no matter what you do, Sabinno is going to be a one-sided idiot and repost his doomsaying in various other vocabulary-rich replies...
I <3 the people here that are posting doomsaying and other crap.
Let's put it in this format. I'm reporting a bug. The new system is buggy as crap because SMP is buggy as crap. Are you going to hate me because it's a snapshot meant for bug reporting? Of course you will because you see negativity and think it's inherently bad, evil, and no sense to come from it. Sure, I'd give Mojang more time to work out the SMP bugs, except they've had since the release of Alpha to do so.
The new system in theory is a good idea, but I would've much preferred they fixed and flushed out SMP way before this. Tie one shoe at a time, Mojang.
@SVen-I've had the hardcore bug. Does that mean I'm a filthy liar or prehaps I'm just one of those who have encountered the bug? I sure hope you choose the first and I am included in your doomsaying rants. I could write about it in my diary later.
Anyone who thinks these are 'vocabulary-rich' replies is simply too much of a low-level reader to understand what I'm saying.
Also, I'm not one-sided, there are some intelligent people who agree with me, although I'm not stating an opinion here, just stating facts.
I also realized I will never post in this forum again due to the obscene levels of Eternal September in this forum, nearly everyone who posts regularly hear being a ninkenpoop who can't use grammar for **** and does nothing but argue with intelligent OPs who have some facts to offer, then turns around and agrees that 'Mojang is ****' with every ****ing whiner on this forum.
Also, I'd like to point out that you can't tell someone not to complain about the snapshots on this forum. This forum was literally ****ing created for complaints and nothing otherwise. We're not here to report bugs, Mojang has a designated system here for that. We're not here to praise, the mods here actually look down upon that based on the time I reviewed 1.9pre2 in a nice long paragraph, where someone agreed with me but the thread was locked because it was 'off-topic'.
Hopefully you all can improve the quality of your posts and threads soon, RU forum.
"vocabulary-rich" ~even i wasnt sure if that was supposed to be an insult or a compliment when i typed it. i understand what youre saying, you just make it sound a bit too stuck-up by the way you do. sorry, i get that some people are just like that...
"one-sided" ~well, you DO act pretty one-sided. you continue to restate facts, theres no doubt there, but you restate ones that people have already argued against. you just happen to restate them with a different wording...
i still think you need to relax a bit. maybe wait until your intestines arent in so much of a knot to post again? you seriously sound like you very subtly hate the world right now. just sayin'.
When you're not connected to the internet, no Minecraft. If you have a bad internet connection, you can time out. In single player.
That can easily be fixed.
All they have to do is to have the server and client set themselves up onto the localhost (127.0.0.1). The packets won't even be sent out of the computer then. No internet needed, no need to worry about bandwidth, because it won't even use your network adapter.

:L Sab has a point. If they simply cannot optimize it for 1.3 (which I highly doubt because Valve Time is now halved for the case of Mojang in regards to the Mod API, but eh.)
Take me with a pinch of salt though, they'll be working on it all week. Good ol Jeb and friends will sort it out.
