Wow! this is brilliant. The first beautiful streetlamp i've yet to see
Thanks! Not so useful though as you would need to place a lot of them, and close to one another, to keep them from spawning bad dudes.
However, this design is super easy to customize and cheap to make. There are literally dozens of ways to play off this design to make lots of cool things. So a fancy lamp light here and there mixed with regular lamps and torches should make a great looking way to keep out aggressive mobs.
Has anybody tried putting two stairs, normal right-side up, next to each other but facing opposite directions. Then above them put two stairs with teh same opposing configuration but upside down. This should make a wall with 1m cubed hole in the middle but it would be geometrically offset and so we could create staggered lattices ?
Also see if you can fire an arrow through the hole.

That was the FIRST thing I did! You can't shoot through the hole though.
Threw together a couple more designs, one of which is probably the best thing I've ever built in minecraft ever. (pssstttt! it is the one with 4 lamps!)
The one on the right is my favorite, but at that height getting the redstone right was weird. I am not any type of good at redstone, so if it seems obvious to you then to me at first it was like pulling on a door with a huge PUSH sign on it.
Here is the basic wiring:
Without the wire dot on the top block, that touches the wool, it doesn't work.
Very nice designs. I made one small change when I made them on my world. I added an extra lamp under the ground, and the light shines out thru the stairs at the bottom. It helps to give it more practical use without sacrificing the aesthetic design.
Freaking sweet now all we need is some sort of photoreactive sensor block so we don't have to turn these things on by hand ..... or build a criminally large timing circuit :tongue.gif:

Edit: Added a couple more designs here.
I'm going to have to use that design myself.
It was just added in today's snapshot. Place a normal stair block on the underside of another block.

It's glowstone and four pieces of redstone, unless to meant something else.

A bit too big to be a practical street level lamp, yep! But as a means to light up an ornate bridge, or castle entrance it is great.
It may not be practical for lighting, but it will look nice in temples and mansions.

Um, yes you can
There's a recipe.
It involves glowstone and redstone.
Derp.

Don't sweat it, the magnanimous amount of bugs in that snapshot far overshadowed the good!
