Hello fellow minecrafters and redstoners. I spent quite a while making a 1 block wide 3x3 piston door. However, by no means, is it compact, useful, nor optimized. It's just here for the concept. You guys can probably make it much much better. And yes, it is completely 1 wide, no hole in the center, no loopholes or tricks. It can be fully encased in a 3 wide wall.
This is the full contraption. Like, I said, not compact, but it is 1 wide. Input is that little lever on the bottom.
Here is the door closed. It's close time is fairly decent.
And here is it open. However, it's open time is horrendous.
Finally, just some ending notes here. There had to be some bussing and delay on the bottom to get it to work, but that could easily be taken out if the separate functions of the monostable were split between the double extender and the right piston that gives the block.
Version 2
This one didn't take nearly as long as the first one. The open and close times on this version are insanely improved. It rivals some of the non-1 block wide versions. Unfortunately, like the last version, I couldn't get all the pistons to sync properly. It's a little off and causes a circular pattern of closing.
Full Contraption
It measures 19 wide, 18 high, and obviously 1 thick. The lever on the bottom is the input.
And here it is encased in a 3 thick stone wall, just to give a sense of scale. (The old one is in the background XD)
As a result of MazeCraft's challenge, I bring to you, ladies and gentleman, the very first 1 wide tileable 3x3 piston door in all of minecraft:
Full Contraption Layered 4 Times for Effect
It has an EXTREMELY slow open and close time and has a really awkward opening and closing method, but it works, and it uses very little above ground space.
And world download. Be careful of lag, because the door can glitch if your computer lags. Try to limit opening the doors to only 1 or 2 at a time. The levers are on the right side, near the bottom. http://www.mediafire...dnso9hzl2fyc52a
P.S. By NO MEANS is this door practical, compact, or fast.
Version 4!!!
This one is somewhat more compact than the last one, is completely tileable, the doors can be individually opened and closed at any time, and it's not direction or coordinate dependent, as far as I tested.
Full Contraption, As Always
The open and close times are a little slower, but it's definitely more reliable. Probably still has some glitches and bugs. Also, the closing and opening methods are really awkwardly timed. They could be changed easily though. I just used that method because it worked, and I didn't want to risk breaking it. Lever on the bottom right activates them all. You could obviously replace that with whatever input method you want.
P.S. I never could fully test this because my laptop is absolutely horrible and could barely render the door. If anyone wants to test it and give feedback, that would be very much appreciated.
Good idea. But not extremely efficient. You would need lots of room and it seems pointless since you can build the same thing but much more compact. But +1 for making something so cool

Well I'll be damned, something that is what it says in the title, good job! I hope you learned some things about vertical wiring that will help with future less arbitrary project
Added a new version that is somewhat more practical. Just simplified some of the pulsing circuits and got rid of a bunch of delays. Tell me what you think.

I forgot to quote you in my post so that you would see it; my take on the 1-wide. Sorry for double posting

Bit of a disappointment here, by pure chance I built this at an x coordinate that makes it so I can decrease the timing Now I have to make that ABBA on the bottom right have 8 ticks on top and 2 on bottom, making it bigger! D: It is the same speed either way, however.
I downloaded the save, and I must say this is the single most useless redstone project I have ever seen But awesome job! I think the reason you can't do too many doors at once is not because of lag, but because of a block update problem; probably somewhere in the mass of piston pulse limiters.
In addition, I fixed the door and added a few things that you missed, as well as changed the timing into the side blocks to make it more visually appealing
the original picture missed this torch here; also the obsidian is not necessary:
Here is the current fix for the door:
Here are the visually appealing timings:
to all the posts saying useless. adventure maps. even the most horrendous useless thing has occasional use in adventure maps, imagine the look on someone with very little redstone knowledge's face when this huge 4 thick 3x3 wall opens up to reveal a door layer by layer! i'd say that be worth the speed of it
Imagine a full tunnel of these. o-o Every challenge or puzzle you complete, 1 layer of the tunnel is opened.
*scribbles notes*
needs to happen, will bare that in mind for my next map (if it gets made you get credited for the awesome door xD)
-edit- having said that, and imported it into a new world, i cant seem to get it working for some reason, must have copied it wrong, had it all working earlier o.o
Unfortunately, the tileable version seems to be direction sensitive, even with the new version I created. Still trying to figure it out.
So I was on the MCAddict server when Selulance counted my finalized one-wide as 16x13x1, area 208. 7x3x10 = 210 O.o
This means my one-wide is the smallest 3x3 in Minecraft!

Nice. o-o Glad to see my thread actually accomplished something.

Do you mind linking to his? I tried searching but couldn't find it. I would love to see how he did it.
Here's your tutorial
o_o Very nice. Interesting concept. I would never have thought of wiring the double extender like that.
Challenge accepted.
Joke or not, it is done.
