My friend Eedze has been working on an automatic free farm and I've been trying to help him improve it but we're running out of idea's on how to improve it, so I was hoping for some idea's.
Here's a video showing off how it works.
I've been messing with it and trying to make it better but the only way I can see making it better would be to make it faster somehow or add more than one tree harvester so you can grow another one while the other is harvesting.
I have been thinking on this for like foreverm but without mods you cant get it fully automatic since you cant make it auto re-plant. But still this is awsome! Not preactical but COOL! :wink.gif:

Well, like most farms, nothing is completely automatic. This just makes things easier by putting all of the logs into one easy harvesting area.
I did one of these last year. There is a world download and some rough description available. Also check some later posts in the thread for more details. The thread and presentation is a bit of a mess though.

I'm still looking for more feedback on my configurable Redstone Gate mod. All gates and common circuits (such as e.g. clocks, edge detectors, latches and Flip-Flops) in a single block.
Not sure if you are still working on this, but here are my latest versions:
The front one saves on vertical space but is 1 block wider, slightly deeper and wired a bit messy.
Compared to my previous design, these versions expose way less wire (2 pistons and 1 dust) and are conceptually much simpler to build. Let me know if you want it explained in detail.
Quick legend:
- yellow wool: block detectors
- cyan wool: block detector for tree
- dark green: and-gate
- light-green: RS-NOR latch
- white: not-gate (the one above the latch contains an additional repeater and combines with a block detector to construct a missing-block detector).
- blue wool: vertical wire
- black wool: wire cutter
- red wool: block to transfer current.
Start trigger: tree has grown AND the pressure column is filled to the top.
End trigger: pressure column has been drained.
[edit]Managed to tidy and improve the wiring. It is now 11x16x5 10x16x5 (screenshot not updated).[/edit]

I was thinking, what if you used the auto-wheat design? Have a few dispensers, some with saplings, some with bonemeal.
You gain very little with that as the time to extrude the tree is way larger than the time to manually switch from sapling to bonemeal and back. This is not the case with wheat which harvests in an instant.
If you want to increase harvesting speed efficiency then construct multiple of such farms in parallel and plant (+bonemeal) the next tree while the former ones are harvesting. To increase chopping comfort and speed, combine the output of multiple farms into a single storage area.
And if you're even lazier, have a timed explosion and water-stream the wood items that survive to you. Completely automatic. Just a tiny bit expensive.
This is possible, but indeed a bit costly. A cube of 3x3x3 is completely destroyed by a single block of TNT (but harvests only a part of the blocks). Detonating a cube of 5x5x5 logs leaves the outer wireframe of the cube intact. In my opinion it's only worth it if you have a decent creeper farm and thus a surplus of TNT.

Footprint changed to 9x17x5. It is one block higher than the previous design but less deep. It now accepts trees of height 11 instead of 9.

@JL2579's design.
Oh wow. I'll have to check that in more detail tomorrow.
