In my opinion, this goes to far. They've taken out the factor of learning how to set up a server, how the port forwarding works, and everything actually educational you can get out of Minecraft. What they're really putting in schools is computers with custom maps installed to help you "learn". Sure, I'd be fun to play video games in school, but no thank you, this isn't learning.
This would be so much better than the crappy programs I barely ever use at my school. It's something that students will recognise, utilise and be much more enthusiastic about.
+1 for Mojang.
I actually expected this the day I started playing minecraft... Although a few things are wrong about it.
Young kids might start thinking sticking coal on a stick = flaming torch.
Might start thinking trees don't burn if you put a small enough torch on it
etc
etc
and like 80% of minecrafters just wanna kill creepers, and don't like building. it's annoying
I read the website but I'm still horribly confused. It sounds more like a joke than an actual learning device. Unless you are able to learn spelling and math in the world of Minecraft while constantly fighting the urge to build a giant **** out of sand, I don't see exactly what education could possibly be attained by playing Minecraft. Apparently the teachers can post assignments and such, but the example given is to chop down some trees. It seems more like a mod to help you learn to play Minecraft than anything else.
what do you do if creepers blow up your virtual school house? do we get extra credit for rebuilding it? will the virtual school go on lock down? if i bring a bow and arrow to virtual school and shoot everyone will i get virtually arrested? im taking this too far. xD
this will work up to the point where some one makes a giant D*** and the teacher bans him therefore, causing complaints, therefore stopping the program, therefore... is such an epic word
Nope. The idea is great but it's already been used by somebody else. As much as I love Minecraft, Roblox is a better program for teaching and it's used in hundreds of schools in the US already. Minecraft isn't very realistic, but Roblox is hugely realistic in physics and building blocks and even simulation of driving. Roblox has a ton of learning elements that help children to use creativity while learning. That's because the game was MADE for that. Minecraft wasn't. Sorry Minecraft, but for once in a very long time, Roblox wins IMO.
EDIT: I just thought of something else... Redstone, Minecraft can teach with redstone. That's good I guess but that also bring me to say that I used to play Roblox when I as younger and that game helped me learn Lua Script because it can be used to help you create your games. I think Lua Script is better to learn than redstone tech. XD
+1 for Mojang.
Most likely it will be minecraft worlds filled with signs. But it would still look nice and give a geeky feel to school XD
