Weapons mods, armor mods... Anything that makes it more fun. I don't want anything like too many items because that's not really surviving haha. Technic pack I would probably suck at so please don't suggest that. Thanks.
I don't like total overhaul mods, but I do like mods that add in neat little things such as extra biomes or maybe bigger dungeons. It all depends on what you would like out of Minecraft d:
I'm with you on too many items, what's the point if you already have everything. You could try just one or two of the technic mods, play with them a bit to figure them out, and go from there, the whole pack is a bit overwhelming. I'm playing with just the Powercraft mod, and while there's some TMI things about it, like the ability to make and control mob spawners, you don't have to use them. The mining machine, conveyors, and other factoy elements present a whole new build challenge to the game. I'm toying with starting a let's play series just with this mod, it's so good.
Im on a TerraFirmaCraft kick right now. Its a Complete over haul of minecraft. inspired by Dwarf Fortress. And new patches that change alot come out quite often.
Be aware its ALOT different than normal minecraft and while the learning curve isnt a brick wall like Dwarf Fortress its still pretty steep for the average gamer. Its strongly recommended if you do try it to check the wiki and the forum to find out just how to do things.
But once you figure the basics out, its alot funner than normal minecraft (for me at least)
I recommend also getting Smart Move, I cant play with out it. the main lure to it is the ability grab onto ledges and pull your self up, and crawl through single square holes. It also changes the way you swim to be faster and with an animation to match.
I really think Smart Move should be integrated into normal minecraft.

"I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong."
heres 5 mod packs from technic launcher tekkit, technic, yobox, voxelmodpack, and last hack/mine therere all good also some mods are like this sdk guns mod ugocraft thaumcraft thaaumcraft arcana craft aether, moon, mars those are good and some more are better enchanting better dungeons witch is in yobox btw and theres alot more to try out btw i dont think technic launcher requires anything i think its a auto installer
i would highly suggest thirst mod for minecraft 1.4.4, its a really great survival mod for survival lovers. basically what it does is it makes the game more challenging and more reallistic by implementing thirst into the game. it adds a thirst bar which is like a hunger bar except it shows water droplets and depletes 3 times quicker. i think u should try it out!
I think that mo' creatures, more creeps and weirdos, smart moving, timber, and vertical redstone go together well to make a good survival pack. I also like recipe book just in case you forget how to make something in a mod.

This. Terrafirmacraft makes the game so much better it isn't even funny.
The only problem is, it's almost a completely new game with a bigger difficulty and learning curve than Vanilla. If you're a master at vanilla, you'll find yourself a novice in Terrafirmacraft. (Also, as a pretty funny side effect from playing TFC, once you're pretty good at TFC you'll find vanilla Minecraft to be a joke. Just know that if you're going to play Terrafirmacraft, you're going to need to do a lot of learning and a lot of failing and/or dying.)

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
I only use mods that add stuff I can believe could actually be in minecraft and I never like them too big like Technic. Some mods that I am currently using and I enjoy a lot are Primitive Mobs, Utility Mobs, Gems+, Ruins, Pet Bat Mod and Not Enough Items helps you with the recipes.

I also like Timber!. It can demolish a giant jungle tree with one chop of the bottom of the trunk
I am ninja'd far too often.
You said not to suggest the Technic pack, but you could just use certain parts of that mod, like Redpower or Buildcraft.
okay, thank you
It only destroys the logs, so the leaves will decay and drops saplings
