Hi guys,
After a couple hours' effort today locating a stronghold with eyes of ender then building a railway to and tower at the location where the eye entered the ground, I'm a little frustrated. I scoured the stronghold and couldn't find the end portal or even evidence of the end portal room.
When I'm caving or exploring areas like strongholds, I always follow a "left-hand rule" - that is, I follow the wall with my left hand and always place torches on the left. This ensures that I don't miss any passageways and that I can always find my way out by doing the reverse - keeping the torches on my right hand side. Of course, with strongholds and other labrythine areas, it's always possible that the "left-hand rule" will fail to explore every possible passageway; however, I have gone back through the stronghold three times, checking at every intersection that I placed torches down every possible branch. In other words, I don't think it's likely that I missed part of the stronghold.
A significant portion of the stronghold was cut through by a series of caverns. I'm inclined to believe that the cavern destroyed the end portal room upon world generation. Am I correct in assuming this is possible?
I'm also considering the possibility that the end portal room is somehow not attached to the rest of the stronghold due to an artifact of the random stronghold generation algorithm; is this a possibility?
Also, is it possible, using my world seed, to figure out the coordinates where the end portal should have generated? This way I could travel to those coordinates in creative to verify that the end portal does not exist in the stronghold that I discovered.
Are there any other ideas for how to locate the end portal in the stronghold and/or determine whether the end portal room has been destroyed or not?
It's always a possibility that ravine generation destroyed it, but if you want a fresh pair of eyes to look things over, post the seed and coordinates and we can give it another look, just for the 1% that you missed a stairway, fallen gravel, etc.
Because it was a couple layers lower than most of the stronghold.
Yes. There is much more to explore on those lower levels. I suspect that the two layers were separated by a cavern or two, cutting off access between upper and lower layers. Thanks again
I took a couple stacks of arrows into the End along with a few cooked chickens, some iron armor, and a stack of cobblestone for building things. Taking out the dragon wasn't so hard; I just took out the crystals first. The most annoying part was all the endermen. Immediately after I killed the dragon, an enderman decided it was a good idea to attack me. In a panic, I tried to run into the portal, but died just before I could save myself. I lost about 97 levels of experience. Oh well! haha. I returned to the End and jumped through the portal to get the credits to run.

In 1.7 versions (and maybe in 1.8 snapshots, not sure here) the portal chamber is sometimes detached from the main structure. On a server I play, the portal chamber is in the ocean, above its bottom, just floating there.
This also happens in older versions (the stronghold in my 1.6.4 world had a couple sections (if not the End Portal, which I directly found using Eyes of Ender so this wouldn't have mattered) separated by a wall, in one case there was a button by itself with no doorway), especially when they are under an ocean, because water prevents pieces from generating, except for the End Portal room (which is all that will generate if you add strongholds to the Superflat preset Water World).
Also, this applies to caves and ravines, which don't actaully even cut through strongholds (never mind that they generate in a completely separate step); rather, the game only replaces non-air blocks when generating walls (note that doorways and interior parts generates regardless, explaining the odd stronghold pieces left behind; I made a mod that prevents both of these so you get fully intact strongholds no matter what).
Hello all,
I too have been searching for hours and cannot seem to find the end portal in my world. I have obviously located the stronghold however after searching through walls, digging down, etc. I am burnt out and have finally given up. I will leave my seed below as well as the co-ordinates to my stronghold entrance. If anyone has any spare time can u please have a look for my end portal as I am strongly concerned as to if it is a glitch. Anyway thx and any help is much appreciated

Co-ordinates to my stronghold entrance I've made= X: -35 Y: 74 Z: 283
Again if anyone can help then a huge thx in advance. xD

The stronghold I'm exploring is somewhere around x = 600± and z = -10±
lol! Did you get the dragon egg?

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
