Ok I have a village with 10 houses, 2 of which i made. now i have trapped 2 villagers in a house and i want them to mate. THEY WILL NOT MATE! What am i doing wrong, and before you say anything i will state what i know. I know i have houses correct because i made them exact replicas of the smallest house. So i ended up with 2 more small houses than the original village.
i plan to get as many new villagers as i can, help me out and give me some knowhow
The wiki says they will mate so that the population is 0.35 the number of doors, presumably less villagers than houses. This means you will have to kill off villagers or add houses with doors.
Yes as Crimsollite said a village's population is capped at 0.35 times the number of houses. Specifically, villagers will breed until the number of adult villagers reaches, but does not exceed this number. Then any remaining baby villagers will grow to adulthood, but no new babies will be born, bringing the total number of villagers to slightly above this number.
So in a village with only ten houses, they will only breed if there are only two adult villagers in the entire village. If there are three, then one more would put them over the cap, so they wont have any babies. You need to build them some more houses (or "houses") if you want population growth. Thankfully it's pretty easy to make "fake" houses -- just put some wooden doors inside the roofs or around the outside of existing structures, no need to erect a whole new building. Check the link in my sig for more detailed info on what makes a "house."

This. If you want it to be more realistic, houses with multiple rooms also work.
Blake, if you want to make the houses still look authentic, you can always add a back door to each house (2 houses out of 1) a bedroom with a door (3 for 1), a bathroom area, (4 for 1) and a kitchen (5 for 1) plus many other things.

You have to be careful with interior doors, or they may not count as "houses." You need to make sure there are more "roof" blocks within five blocks distance on one side of the door than on the other.
A related question on this topic of mating villagers...I am making an apartment building based on the 5x5 block houses, as it is easy to give each apartment 2 doors. They have 2 doors in the front, then I placed two apartments back to back so the other side could also get 2 front doors. Then the connecting back wall gets two more doors. I could probably even put two doors between each room to the side as well though I haven't yet tried that. A row of 10 placed back to back (for a total of 20 rooms) gives me 60 doors. I try to make the apartment look nice so it doesn't distract from the asthetics of the city.
I am wondering if I do a second level (or a second half level really, in the roofing) if I must give the villagers access to the doors and rooms in the upper level in order for them to count? Or is their mere presence enough to cause additional villager population and is no access actually needed?
Doors do not need to be accessable to count towards your door-to-villager ratio. I have made extensive areas under my villages filled with doors to simply up the door-to-villager count and it has seemed to be calculated into the ratio. I forget the distance (I think it is 40 tiles) but after a gap of so many tiles the doors are considered a seperate village.
The villager AI still leaves much to be desired, as of last time I've dealt with them they seem to eventually congregate in the eastern-most areas of villages. After numerous Minecraft days nearly the entire popluation ends up crammed into the eastern-most buildings.
This guy does some simple experiments to show how simple the calculations are made by the game code. All it pretty much takes is a door and a block to make villagers excited / horny.

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
and i will post a picture if it will add to the budiling count.
It's Magus. No "n". But you're welcome
