What you do is press the chat button (T by default) and type /gamerule doFireTick false
Yep this'll work but there is one teensy little problem, that rule stops fires from spreading but it also stops them from burning out, and doesn't stop new fires from starting! So with doFireTick false, when lava or lightning start fires they'll just keep going FOREVER and never actually burn anything or go out! Your house will be fine but you'll see some weird things happen in the rest of the world!

Also, you have to have cheats enabled if it's a single player world, otherwise you won't be able to do anything about it.
