Let me start off by saying Minecraft, is an absolutely amazing game, as it is now. As in, if there were no more updates, it is STILL, an amazing game. I in no way hate or am against anything that has been done (with some reservations), but at the same time am human, and demand more of my product for my money, and time.
That opening statement leads me into my next series of questions and rants. And somewhat uneducated opinions. Remember before you flame that I have not taken 2 hours of my time to do research on whether or not these opinions/suggestions/compliaints/gripes have already been addressed or will be, I had more important things to do, like making dinner for my children and working.
Firstly and foremost:
1) WTF is Mojang doing with our money? Seriously.
I don't mean that in a negative way. Hell if I made Minecraft and was an overnight multi-millionare (in theory), I don't know what I would do with myself. Probably drink myself to death. But honestly from a consumer standpoint I would be making Minecraft 2. ITS OWN FREAKING ENGINE. Or, a tested engine. I mean, I'm not expecting Unreal or CoD X here, just, cmon, JAVA?! Are you kidding me? How many of you have had "A JAVA EXCEPTION HAS OCCURED!" or some crappy popup ruin your Minecraft? Even when you aren't playing it!? Get your ow engine Mojang!
2) Updates
I get it. I am not a computer programmer. I don't know what is required for an update. Maybe it requires 100 people, and 1,000 hours of work a peice to make an update. I don't know. But, at the same time, what isup with these upates? Kitties? Jungles? Carrots? Okay, great, I get that you have a team that is small, independent, but c'mon? That's all you got? With like 4-6 months in-between time? Give me something, please, this isn't enough for me as a consumer.
3) Performance [MAY LOOP BACK TO #1]
Listen, seriously, honestly, c'mon. I have a $2,400 computer system, purchased ~1 year ago. I can run Skyrim, CoD: BOII, xxxxx <--- insert game @ 15,528,208 FPS. But I can't run your game without a FPS drop? I install one measly 64x64 texture pac and I drop to 14 FPS? What gies? Seriously. 2 Grand on my end, roughly 1 month of sweat and blood and I can't run your indie game at a moderate level. What's the deal here? We are talking 16x16 shaders and such? Is this because of JAVA? Get your own engine, or something, hell IDK. Something, CMON!
4) Mod Support
I don't know what I am expecting here, but, seriously. 1.4.x release! CARROTS! WITHERS! WITCHES! BEACONS! ETC.! Okay I get it, I have to reinstall addons, but, 8 days later, 1.4.x1! OMFG! My stuff doesn't work anymore! Thank god I get to mod my ENTIRE FREAKING GAME AGAIN, DUE TO A STUPID UPDATE THAT I DIDN'T HAVE ANY ISSUE WITH TO BEGIN WITH. THANK YOU MOJANG. ANOTHER HOUR OF MESSING AROUND IN FILES JUST TO MAKE YOUR GAME WORK. You guys rock! (Insert SARC)
5) Multiplayer Support
Dude, Okay I'm beating a dead horse here, But like, Cmon. SSP is great, but everyone plays this for SMP. Where is the BROWSER for this kind of stuff? Even if you nix all the prior recommendations and just have this sort of thing, with mods downloadable and just, BAM, you are in the game, WTF!? Is it that hard? Example:
Dorky McDork's Awesome SMP Non-Violent Server 10/10 ---- 4/10 Reviews
Stupid McDouche's SMP PvP Raid/Grief Server 17/204 --- 27/37 Reviews
I mean, cmon, is it really that hard? You join, download, play, get on with your life. Even if you kept like a top 100 list, or SOMETHING. Christ.
YOU ALL MAY THINK I AM COMPLAINING AND NOT ENJOYING. True, true. But at the same time, These guys have made like, what, 500 Million dollars off of us/you/me? WTF are you doing? I'm not asking for a communistic type franchise here, just a playable game where I din't have to pull my eyeballs out every update, while waiting for updates, or while even trying to just play with friends.
Sorry I'm not into coding 1,248,250,508 lines of code just to get a stable version of this thing to host 3 friends.
IT CANT BE THAT HARD!
***note, I have no coding experience, no I dont have any type of experience other than being a consumer, but what I do have experience with is being a consumer, which is A) Taking my money, profiting, and then improving your product, in a timely manner, and getting me to spend more money, to buy C) your next product.
1. I find java annoying too. The engine is practically DESIGNED to lag. Adobe can be more flexible. I mean, look at terraria! Aside from being 2D, it barely lags for anyone, even with its intense map height, and the fact that an entire world is loaded and rendered all at once, without having to again.
2. Updates can take different amounts of time for different people. Good, flexible coders that know their stuff will get an update for a game out in about a month or so, if it's a simple bug fix update with some new things.
3. Performance varies greatly. There's always the people with the fancy @$$ computers that get over 1000 FPS, while people like us get 30 or 50. I've even found someone whining about getting 100 instead of 200.
4. The mod API has been promised since way back into beta. People said it would be in 1.0. 'Oh, it wasn't! Let's just wait'. They said it would be in 1.3. 'Oh, it wasn't! I'm sure we'll get it in 1.4'. And you know what happened in 1.4? NO API. I know how hard it can be for people to make such a thing, but it can be as simple as copying a bit of Risugami's modloader and forge (With permission and help, of course) and bang! Done. Though, yeah, it is seemingly impossibru to make an integrated modloader.
5. Multiplayer is laggy and annoying. It would be great if we had a big server list like TF2 does. That would be absolutely amazing.
Now, overall? A company making multiple games at once is expected to have time to work on each game respectively, so yeah, they can't focus on minecraft the whole time, even though it got them famous in the first place.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.

Fair enough, but know that when you make a statement in a public place people will go at it. This is no exception.

Java isn't an engine. Java is a programming language. It is quickly becoming a popular one for games due to its accessibility, and simplicity compared to C++, C#, Lua, etc. Minecraft uses the OpenGL engine (because it's amazing, and the alternative wouldn't be free and would do the same (DirectX)). As for how the game runs (like, blocks, items, you, other players, maps, etc), that's it's own engine. It's a simple/dedicated engine, but it is. And if your Minecraft is crashing when you aren't playing it, you need to figure out what's going on with your computer.

You have the full Minecraft already, pretty much since v1. The fact that they keeping going with updating it is a rarity. Mojang currently employs 28 people, and not all of them are developers even. They're also produced two games (Minecraft and Catacomb Snatch) and are working on 3 more (Cobalt, Scrolls, 0x10c) in addition to continuing to update Minecraft. Because of this, don't expect a lot. Also, they are doing bug fixes, fixing NotchCode, and preparing for a huge undertaking of making the Mod API with the engines' overhaul (lighting, rendering, etc).
3) Performance [MAY LOOP BACK TO #1]

People often think that because Minecraft is a simplistic voxel based game, it should have low specs. Here's the numbers: One chunk is 16x16x256 currently. That's 65536 blocks to keep track of. Are any of them special that may change, like your crops, your fluids, your redstone, etc? More memory. Also, the lighting values have to be kept track of. But wait...that's one chunk. Let's say you want a 10x10 group of chunks rendered (which is about normal render, if I remember). 6,553,600. Now I'm assuming you want to render on far. That's 18x18, which is 21,233,664 blocks, and you want to use an HD texture pack. That's why it isn't running well on your rigg, cuz you didn't estimate the specs right.
4) Mod Support

Let me know how well it goes to create a slew of new content, introduce a slew of fixes, and do it all WITHOUT bugs. It's impossible. Mojang has stated that until the Mod API is out, they will not be concerned about breaking people's mods with updates, which makes sense. If they did that, then you would never get any of the updates you want, or any at all. Also, a mod by definition is hacking into the game, and forcibly altering it's content. If you're unhappy that you can't rig the game to do exactly what you want when you want it beyond the scope of the game you bought, well tough.

There is a browser for this stuff, it's community run and it works perfectly. If you can't come to the forums, or to any of the dozens of server sites that exist, then play by yourself and don't complain. Mojang relies on the community, and if the community already has a fully functioning system set up, WHY CHANGE IT. Also, in order to download mods to run, one, that would be a huge security hole in your computer that you should never want, and two, would require the Mod API which they are making.
YOU ALL MAY THINK I AM COMPLAINING AND NOT ENJOYING. True, true. But at the same time, These guys have made like, what, 500 Million dollars off of us/you/me? WTF are you doing? If your knowledge is that of a consumer, then you know that when you purchase a product, you are willingly paying money for something that you deem worth it, so that you may partake in it. If you are so unhappy and unpleased, then why did you buy the game? Look at why you're playing. Are you playing because you want to play Minecraft, or because you want to play some game that is functionally Minecraft, but is the version that you want? Figure that out, and then come back.

I can only hope that the OP, and those who follow like him, won't rant like this again, and I hope that I don't come off as rude, but trying to show the facts in a calm and civilized manner.
I appreciate the comments and to comment on both here I go:
First off Rinn: Your argument about money going to other projects is ridiculous, think about this from my perspective: I will give you one billion dollars (1,000,000,000) to make a product. I expect you to make 10% on your investment, (1,100,000,00). Your product has already made 500-750,000,000 on its standalone product of INDIE production and 20$ pricetag, but you somehow can't spend the money to make this an AAA+ game? Spend a bit, charge 39.99$ a pop, 49.99$ a pop, get half the users, = profit.
I get it, Notch isn't about the dollars, but cmon, this isn't about $$ to me, I am a consumer. I want a GREAT game, which this is minus the problems i pointed out. I will pay 3-4-5 times 29.99 for a game that is worth it. Give me a break with these updates and production. It's like making fire with sticks and tinder when I have a BIC nearby.
Secondly, @ aminecraftguy, who has even heard of these games that mojang is producing? not me, and I am an avid news reader, I read daily about games and have Pulse App and what have you. Where is the media exposure? If you aren't in it to make money, then start a non profit organization. If you want to play in the medium-big league games, then join the club. I'm not a stock holder, I am not asking you to make a 5-10% profit, I am asking you to make a great game, because I love it. Do it, you have the money resources and time, enough to let 1,000 people retire comfortably for the rest of their lives just developing a game for others enjoyment.

If you think that money made can change a game, it won't happen. Minecraft isn't going to ever play like Skyrim, or be as smooth looking as CoD. That's a fact of life because how Minecraft plays, looks, functions is part of it's character, which you bought into.

No more updates? Your earlier post said that you wanted MORE updates, so now we have a discrepancy. Also, if you have a BIC and seemingly can produce a better job than Mojang who you say is using sticks and tinder, than why not download the MCP, decompile Minecraft, recode it, and send Mojang your new code to help them along, after all, it'll benefit not only you but other consumers of the game.

MAJOR logical fallacy. You seem to say that because you haven't heard of something, it mustn't be important. Have you heard of every game that's come out in the last year alone? No. How about the last month? No. Considering that their other games are so early in development that showing them at an expo would be boring, it makes sense they haven't done a huge reveal. Also, it's kinda hard for a company to retire 1000 people when they only employ 28. Just saying.
I'll talk to you in 1 year when you get tired of the same old crap for 1,000,000$ in revenue per day, with sell outs, to $MSFT, a group of ~30 individuals eating steak and lobster for the rest of their lives on your dime. When you realize this game doesn't change, and is the work of a bunch of lazymen trying to earn their next car, while trying to hide under the flag of "indie".

Hmm, it's almost like you're talking to a game dev that works mostly indie. So watch yourself.
Let me ask you this. When you buy a game, like, let's say Dishonored, which won plenty of awards before it came out, and is made by a major company, do you expect to be entertained for all of time and for Bethesda to cater to your whims? If so, you don't know how the world works. If not, then what's different about Minecraft, other than being made by a much smaller company that can't do as much?
Also, saying "/you fail" is a sure way to get in trouble. Just a friendly tip cuz I'll be the nice person

No, absolutely no. But I do expect a polished game. One that merits the 1/4 (250,000,000) or even half 1/2 (500,000,000) billion dollars worth of revenue it has generated worth of product. Even if that trickles down to a 39.99$ game on black friday. You are brainwashed into a yesman of Mojang. Great, yes, an indie Developer has made it, bravo, clap clap, hooray. Yet another billion dollars sinks into the pockets of 28 others. And they have given us...pixels, and none other. Glad you bought into it. I haven't.
Again, you fail to see the point. You fail. I feel as if I am Willy Wonka yelling at you before you give me back my Everlasting Gobstopper. You fail! Show me where I have gone wrong. Literally, LITTERALLY, 1 @%*@% BILLION dollars, and it has gone where? Did Notch feed the homeless? Cuz it looks like he stuffed his pockets. No seriously show me where I'm wrong....
10,000$ says you can't show/do/prove anything of the sort to back that sort of statement up. Keep defending the ghosts fool.
I still don't get what you are saying? Are you complaining about the fact that the game does not have the exact features that you want? When you buy a product, you buy it as is, and anything else you get afterwards is a bonus. So if you are not happy with MC, why did you buy it in the first place? Just because you gave then a few dollars does not mean they need to cater to your every whim.
Also, you dont seem to know the fact that every cent they earn they have to pay TAXES on. Electricyty is NOT FREE. Heating is NOT FREE. You basically have to pay Maintenance Costs, Taxes, Employees, more Taxes, Healthcare etc. Dont start a calculation where 8 Million Copies = 150 Million Euros Profit. Its 12 Million Euros per Month where you have to pay taxes on, which then goes down to ~6-7 Million without you having payed any bill yet. Ever heard of License Fees?
So... Healthcare, heating, air conditioning, electriticy, and the cushion for your employee's ass to sit on is not free in europe? I guess I am sadly mistaken. So, 12 Million euros (~ 15,416,400.00) USD, is the operating cost PER employee? Per month? No wonder Germany had to bail everyone out.
Listen, this math is totally flawed and you are insane. 8 Million copies "x" lets say a discounted 12 euro a Pop still equals millions, and I am generously underesimating, lets say, 1 BILLION dollars (Thank you $MSF), and this is what you come up with? With the update interval you have?
Listen, from a business perspective this is great. If I was an investor, I would toast my next glass of merlot to you. But as a consumer, I've been robbed. Maybe I'm just jealous I didn't come up with a Java game that made millions, but then again we're all the ones that paid for it. Touche Notch, Touche. Funny the the $$ to update ratio is so far apart from other blockbusters.
The fix for number 4 is VERY simple and that's to not update, or update rarely. Either way, your complaints are somewhat true but they're not very well thought out. Like number one. Minecraft 2? Really? What would be different? ._.
Rinn I have a shiny pebble to sell to you. It has all the colors of the rainbow, depending on when you hold it up to the light. It only costs you twenty dollars. Do you want to buy it? Yes you can do whatever you want with this pebble. You can cook it into a hot pebble, smelt it into a liquid pebble, put it into a pile of other pebbles to make a wall...look at this pebble! PEBBLE!
I'll talk to you in 1 year when you get tired of the same old crap for 1,000,000$ in revenue per day, with sell outs, to $MSFT, a group of ~30 individuals eating steak and lobster for the rest of their lives on your dime. You are like 12 aren't you. Lobster and steak, I LOVE how that stereotypes rich people for you. Apparently, you don't seem to play Minecraft, where the only to get steak is to kill cows. And lobsters, they aren't even in game! You don't see Mojang killing cows. Therefore, they do not eat this uber-wealthy food you seem to stereotype. And a bunch of lazymen? You're not even going to use real words now? Trying to earn their next car? There like, only two different kinds of cars in Sweden. And why would they need cars, they live in their office, which if anything should show you how devoted they are to their games. Hiding under the flag of indie... Because CoD is indie, and Elderscrolls is indie... Its stupid people like you that give US a bad name.

Thank you for responding to that, as I didn't think I could without yelling lol. And good point, CoD, Elder Scrolls, etc are all indie. Good job
Mojang can do whatever they want with your money. Keep in mind that out of your 20+ dollars, "they" (Mojang's team) only receive a fraction of it.A lot of the money they get will be to keep their company going. Lights, insurance, trademarks, facility rental, equipment upgrades, ect. These are expensive and will likely take up the bulk of the selling price. The remainder will be going to payroll. Java, while a "simple" engine, is a functional one. Lots of things are built upon Java, and creating your own engine takes a lot of know-how and resources. It may not be in their best interests to hire someone specifically to create an engine for Minecraft. Minecraft would not benefit from an upgraded engine, aside from the java compatibility/stability errors. Other engines, such as the Source engine have their own issues as well. You will not be able to fix everything with just an engine change.
2) Updates
As you said, you have no idea what goes into an update. Neither do we. My best guess? Bug fixes. Finding errors in code (Something I have experience in and know how immensely time consuming it is.) They are working on a limited team, I believe. They don't have the option to have 20+ people chugging away at updates, so that provides a factor, as well.
What gies? Is this because of JAVA? Get your own engine, or something, hell IDK. Something, CMON!
Welcome to Java. Lots of engines have similar problems. Circle back to answer one.
It is up to the mod makers to make sure their creations are compatible. This is not Mojang's problem. You don't have to update if you like your mods too much (Or they are currently unsupported) or if the update contains items you do not want.
Christ.
If it isn't so hard, why don't you do it?
....just a playable game where I din't have to pull my eyeballs out every update, while waiting for updates, or while even trying to just play with friends....
Then don't update. Your problem is solved.
IT CANT BE THAT HARD!
Yes. It can be. Otherwise, you'd be willing to do it (Or perhaps the other modders on this site) for free.
***note, I have no coding experience, no I dont have any type of experience other than being a consumer, but what I do have experience with is being a consumer, which is A) Taking my money, profiting, and then improving your product, in a timely manner, and getting me to spend more money, to buy C) your next product.
It is doubtful that Mojang will make "another product" (I am not counting the Xbox/Portableversions as different products), but they are updating in a timely manner. Their updates are not flawless -- that's why they release the pre-releases in order to stress test them. That way, people report bugs, and things get fixed. It would be a lot more difficult for us and Mojang to simply release updates whenever they wish without a care in the world as to the bugs and optimization.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Life is not measured in the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

I've moved the topic to discussion, suggestions isn't really the right place for rants. Please try to be civilized in replies.
"Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig." — Robert Heinlein
I can only hope that the OP, and those who follow like him, won't rant like this again, and I hope that I don't come off as rude, but trying to show the facts in a calm and civilized manner.
Not trying to flame or be aggressive.
/you fail
Its only 20 bucks! ING BUY IT!
Good job
