Cutting down trees in Minecraft has became frustrating as soon trees began getting bigger and started to spawn with branches. However very little has changed with the tree cutting mechanics. So my suggestion is to make this process much easier by having the tree fall apart once the log attached to the dirt is broken.
Words from Notch, "I will make the entire tree go away again if you destroy the central trunk."
This suggestion is based off of one of Notch's great ideas that never managed to get implemented.
Also, it's basically just implementing Treecapitator.
I was waiting for someone to mention this. I've went through my fair share of mods and plugins to see what mechanism would work best for cutting down trees and I think Notch's idea is by far the best and it's a real shame that it hasn't been implemented. Getting wood would be easier, but I don't see how that's a bad thing. I don't believe it'll effect the balance of the game what-so-ever. In fact, I believe that wood should be the easiest renewable resource that we can obtain; stress free. Also to be honest, the current mechanic has way more flaws than this one.
Current Mechanic
Pros
Every log needs to be cut one by one, making it much easier to balance the durability for tools attempting to cut down a tree.
Cons
Cutting down tall trees which you can't reach requires scaffolding or ladders, making what should been a simple action, become very annoying and tedious.
Cutting down large trees that contain branches is also incredibly tedious, especially when you're at the top trying to find the logs that are hidden inside the clutter of leaves.
Since this mechanic is very tedious and frustrating, players tend to avoid cutting down the top of the larger trees, ultimately leaving an unappealing clutter of logs and leaves floating in your multiplayer server.
This mechanism requires a lot of unnecessary effort.
New Mechanic
Pros
Cutting down trees will be stress free.
Obtaining wood will be easier and thus be more reliable.
Cons
Tools attempting to cut down a tree may need a rework or rebalance in their durability and effectiveness.
I'd hardly call cutting down a big tree "very tedious and frustrating"; I can cut down 4 large jungle trees in one Minecraft day (sunrise to sunset) with some time left. How do I do this? I use a diamond axe with Efficiency IV to mine my way up the trunk in a 2x2 spiral, first cutting three logs from one column then three more from the next, but one block higher up, continuing this until I reach the top, then I stand on the middle and mine my way down, turning around as I do so and removing any branches as I go up/down.
Also, for oak trees, you can restrict their maximum height so they don't grow too tall or many branches (a full height branched tree IS a bit tedious to cut down), plus you can plant them right next to each other (even in 2 dimensions, just make sure you place torches every third block so all of the saplings get light as they grow) to make a wall of wood which can be easily ascended by, again, digging a staircase..
Unless you need a LOT of wood, I hardly think you need any help cutting down trees. How much is a lot? Well, I cut down the number of logs you see below, mostly while building a base, and I hardly thought the process was tedious or frustrating (of course not all at once; I planted oak trees as described above and by the time I needed more wood, they had all grown, along with a few big jungle trees):

I understand that there are ways to restrict trees so they don't become annoying to deal with, but for vanilla Minecraft, cutting down trees should be much easier. While you may find it bearable and maybe even enjoyable, I find it very irritating and just a waste of time. Every friend that enters my server which recently purchased Minecraft, has always left a clutter of leaves and logs in the air. I even sometimes find myself avoiding or even burn down the top layer of trees because it's so stressful to break down. After playing with some plugins and mods, this whole tree cutting idea that I'm suggesting made my Minecraft experience so much more enjoyable. The number one thing that I'd love to see changed/improved about this game, is definitely tree cutting. I've got to admit, the current system that we have now, I don't feel it's polished at all.
I believe the current mechanism is balanced. Makes the task of getting wood more challenging than destroying one log and being done with it. Getting wood is easy enough as it is (being able to take down a tree with a pair of fists seems easy enough to me).
Plus, the current wood cutting mechanic has become synonymous to Minecraft. It would be kind of like remolding creepers to something completely different. It's embedded so deep into the game that it wouldn't make sense to change it.
Chopping down trees has been here for so long that it'll change the game a lot if we change how it works.
Even changing roses to poppies brought a decent impact to the community.

Wow, is pillaring up a few gravel blocks to reach the higher wood blocks sooo hard to do?
And in Fancy graphics, it is quite easy to see where the wood blocks are "hidden" inside the leaves, unless you cut trees during the night.
Get more patience and a decent computer. And less lazy friends. On the server I play, farming rules say to cut down the entire tree, not only misbehavior is frowned upon, it can get you banned. And I also think selfish lazy bums deserve to get banned.
Just install TreeCapacitor if trees makes you so mad, and be done with it. Definitely not something for vanilla.
Also, redundant.
Well, not really ( I just searched ), but slightly. It HAS been suggested one time recently.
But as above it's unbalanced and pointless.

Why Minecraft mobs should NEVER have multiple attacks:
- No other PC mobs do. - Mob behaviour is intended to be simple.
Why you should NOT name new "special ability" weapons as "XXX Swords":
- No other swords have special abilities. - Make a new kind of weapon.

Changing Minecraft's mascot is not even remotely the same as changing a simple game mechanic that hardly defines Minecraft. I remember when doors used to open when attacked, I reported this bug numerous of times and eventually this mechanic was fixed, being that it was prone to problems. That mechanic was used so intensively and yet was still improved. You can easily argue that it was part of Minecraft but it unfortunately got changed, just like many other things.

I extremely enjoyed the rose update. Many children play this game, so it wouldn't hurt for the game to be a little more accurate. Sometimes the community doesn't make the right decisions, they define the norm and don't allow people to think out of the box. You should expect major changes, that's what many people are asking for. Anyone who doesn't want change has the ability to go back to previous patches, so if you don't like the new roses you can choose to not update your client.

My graphics are completely maxed out and it's still hard to find a hidden log within all the leaves in a large oak tree. I also own an alienware computer, so trust me I highly doubt it's my computer. In fact, I find it a little offensive that you would blame my computer without any reasonable cause. I don't think laziness is the problem, but rather a poor mechanic that hasn't been improved since beta. Friends who've recently
purchased Minecraft leave this clutter of wood and leaves, not because they're lazy, but because they're new to the game and didn't expect it to act in such a way. Also I don't know about you, but I'm not going to start banning all of my friends on my server because they're not playing the way that I want them to play. That's a little ridiculous when it's something as simple as forgetting to cutting down a tree because the mechanic needs to be improved.
Also, redundant.

Wood isn't a very valuable resource to begin with. I don't see how this will make that much of a difference to balance, especially when wood can be set on fire and disappear in seconds.
This should only work with naturally generated trees so buildings which use logs would be completely unaffected. If mods and plugins can program this mechanic, then I'm sure Mojang can too.
I don't like the idea of getting wood 6 - 12 times faster. sure those last little logs up there can be annoying... why not make it so logs fall like sand, but only when disturbed?
I'm sorry, but this is stupid. Get a mod if you want this, tekkit has it. This would change minecraft. Floating trees that don't fall is iconic, and this would ruin it. Absolutely no support.
EDIT: also, like you said, this would also make it so we would have to redo axes. It would make it too easy to get wood, too. Also, they would have to redo wood mechanics, because how would they (with the currant system) make it so trees do this, but not other wood?
If it was an enchant, I would be fine with that, it would be great! It would give you a reason to enchant your Ax. But, if this is for all trees, this is not good. If the tree simply collapsed, there would be no need for tree farms, forests would be destroyed on multiplayer in an instant. What you see is a small pluck on an annoying feature, what you don't see is the extremities of which is the block itself.
Say you make a wooden house and you realize you placed your log in the wrong place. You take out your ax and hit the block. That causes a domino reaction destroying your entire house instead of that simple block. You can argue that you could just take out your hand and punch it, but that takes longer, and the reason for tools is to speed up the process, not demolish it.

I thank those who provided criticism which wasn't insulting, but was instead constructive. This made me think a little out of the box and look into Notch's post a bit more. So here is my new idea, tell me what you think.
Well, then the only way this would work without ruining the game (having it being so OP) is, like a previous player mentioned, have that single log take as much time it takes to break if you were to manually break each log (eg. if tree has 7 logs, you'll take 7 times as long to break that first block) and your axe's durability should go down by 7 as well. And this should only work with axes and not with other tools.

Support, the Central block however should be in the center of the tree and not cut anything below it. If you cut above then the tree wont fall, making it useful if you just want to go up.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
