what if podzol spread only if the spreading blocks were within a certain distance of a tree, thereby representing the leaves falling and decaying to change the composition of the soil

"True love is like a pair of socks, you gotta have two and they gotta match"
I like there being a rare type of dirt. The question isn't "Why shouldn't it spread?" it's "Why should it spread?" I know you've said it makes the block more usefull, but it really doesn't. If nether quartz grew onto other blocks we wouldn't consider it more usefull, we would consider it less of a prize because you would only need to find one and then you could have infinite amounts.
Podzol should be in limited supply, that would make building roads or whatever you want out of it hard. If it's hard to build with podzol then people will try even harder to find the biome and collect it.

I think this works. Players who want it to spread can place it under trees. And if players don't want podzol to spread they can plant it away from their trees. And overall, the spreading isn't unbelievably silly.

Glad to see some people giving open minded thought to suggestions, and being able to agree on compromises.
As a block Podzol is suitable for small and occasional patches on the ground mixed with dirt or cobblestone. But too much Podzol will make it bland and less effective when combined with its surroundings. By letting Podzol spread, dirt will be taken over and it will look bad. But it will be wise for Podzol to be a renewable resource as it will be detrimental if players resort to farming it. Without those patches of Podzol, the surroundings will be so much worse.
Will it spread over gras and mycelium?
Or will grass spread over it, like it doe to mycelium?
Grass doesn't spread over mycellium. If a dirt block becomes grass or mycellium it remains that way. I would like to see podzol act the same way. Currently a podzol block is always podzol, grass can't spread to podzol, and if you place a block on podzol it stays podzol, unlike grass and mycellium which revert to dirt.

Podzel roadways and ASCII art are the kinds of things I would see it being useful for doing, so seeing it spread everywhere is unlikely to happen.
As a small tweak, what if its spread could only happen in certain biomes like the Roofed Forest or Tiaga? I do like the idea that its spread might take place under trees as well. Regardless, making this a renewable resources in some fashion is something that should happen, even if it is throwing leaf blocks into a caldron for composting. Heck, making caldrons useful for something might even be nice too.

Support. I really don't care what podzol is made of or how it acts in RL. I'd rather not have to ruin my pretty landscape forever if I want to farm and use it elsewhere, too.
I totally agree, I want to use podzol to make 'dirt' roads on my smp world, a 3 wide road that is a short 300 blocks is already 900 podzol blocks. Building longer roads is going to drain all the podzol from the mega taiga biome, and also take away the natural beauty of the biome if it can't spread under any circumstance.
For those who think Podzol shouldn't spread for whatever reason, isn't that unfair to those of us who want play survival and want to use the block in large quantities? I am playing in a new smp world (new to 1.7) and my base is about 1100 blocks north away from spawn, I plan to build a 3 wide road back to spawn. That is 3300 blocks of podzol. And that is just to my base, there other players, currently in 2 different directions, as well as another player 700 blocks further north of me and 600 east. Granted some players plan to build rails. But at least 1 other player plans to build a road as well. That adds up to a lot of podzol very quickly.
We do know where there is a mega taiga biome, and it is likely large enough to have enough podzol blocks. But we would be destroying the natural beauty of the biome in order to use the block. Minecraft allows us to replant forests, we can even manipulate it to grow all large trees, or all short trees. We can multiply water infinity, we can make stone or cobblestone infinity with lava and water. We can even create unlimited obsidian. Nearly everything in minecraft is renewable, or in such vast quantities (dirt, sand, gravel etc) it is practically speaking infinite. Why should podzol be separated from the spirit of the game, which to me is, the freedom to build what you want, how you want, out of what you want.
Please support podzol spreading. Hopefully we can get this brought to the attention of Mojang and they can implement this suggestion.
Podzol is a type of dirt. Not a type of grass. Notice that its data value is 3. Same as dirt with a damage value of 2. It is just dead pine needles fallen from the trees. So it would only makes sense that it would appear naturally under spruce leaves in mega taiga biomes. But not the same as spreading.

Ever had something (or somebody) on your railroad that you did not want there?
I personally think no spread is a bit foolish, since the entire point of podzol is that it is generated by the forest environment. For this reason I think that podzol should spread only within mega taiga biomes.
Guy's, you realize there is a limited amount of diamonds in the game right? Everyone agrees that we don't need infinite diamonds, but a limited amount of Podzol? Outrage!!!
Not everything needs to be farmable. If you want to use Podzol for building then get looking for a few Mega Taigas.
So yo mean to tell me a type of DIRT is meant to grow and spread? No support.

I have too slow an internet connection to be a lurk. If I wate time opening the page, I might as well reply.
Yes. Yes I do.
Maybe spreading isn't the answer but there should be some way to renew it. Maybe composting or crafting dirt with leaves or something.

"Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best."
To be honest, I would actually love to see that happen. But my only restrictions are that they can't reach across other biomes, and they cannot cross rivers.

As Salem_85 said, you're comparing two totally different things. Also, with villager trading, we can already get unlimited diamond armor and tools, so in that regard diamonds are already infinite. As Salem said, we are talking about a block this is basically just fancy dirt. It's an aesthetic block, like wool. The players who want to use this block, want to use it for how it looks, and most of us don't want to rip apart every m.t biome we find. But that is currently the only way to get any podzol in large quantities. Way back in beta, sheep did not regrow their wool, and you couldn't breed them either, so getting large amounts of wool was tedious. I believe that wool to podozl is a more apt comparison. Of course that has long since been changed, and most would agree that is a change for the better.
Those of us who support podzol spread also feel it would be a change for the better. It is certainly not a game breaking adjustment, podzol would not be able to spread to grass/mycelium, so there is no danger of it leaching out across the land.
To say it's not realistic for podzol to spread, a great many things in minecraft are not literately possible, but it's within the realm of creative realism. Things like floating islands of earth and stone exist. Zombies, skeletons, and other monsters exist. Giant mushroom islands exist. Is a compost block that can spread to dirt such a breach of realism that is has no place in Minecraft? Those of you who still oppose it's support, ask yourself this question; if podzol spread, following the same rules as grass and mycelium, would it have any tangible impact on how you play the game?
I am honestly interested in answers to that last question, so please discuss.

And a downright disgusting environment. I'd love to see brown spots beneath every tree.
