I can see some real uses for a place block command. I am working on a map and I want to use minecraft's normal generation. I am trying to make a spawn and redstone area which I can use MC Edit to copy paste into a new world and make that world the map.
It is going to be a large PvP thing and I wan't to easily be able to make new worlds and copy paste the schematic in there. I also want it to be easy for anyone else who want's to make it for themselves. The use for in this map would be to place beacons to lead the two groups to each-other after a long delay.

A command that a player can use that places a block Id at a world x, y, z location. My application of the command would be put it in command blocks and have the command blocks make beacons after a delay.

Oh, I get it. This could be useful for maps and the like.
Something along the lines of /place 138 0 0 64 and then possibly some block values. Where the command is /place id is 138 (Beacon) and 0 0 64 is the location. It could have even more uses if you could some how place a chest and list items inside of it, or /place ID# where a chest is to put that block in the chest. With this command a /destroy /remove would fit nicely.

Sorry to be unclear but to put it as simply as possible. A command to place a block at a coordinate. Possible use /place (item ID) (x location) (y location) (z location) (extra block values). This command would be accompanied by /delete /destroy or /remove command to remove blocks from a coordinate ex: /remove (x location) (y location) (z location) This would be very useful in custom maps.

So basically it create a block somewhere on the map, which would do what exactly? pardon my asking. you would have to look up the exact co-ords, and you might as well just place it while you are looking up the co-ords.

Don’t quote me. And Don’t quote me on not wanting to be quoted either.
In an adventure map or something you can put in in a command block and have the command block place something in the map. Like rain lava when people get close, or take away the floor. I want t use it in a mc edit schematic which I could copy paste into any world and make that world a PvP map. The schematic would contain the command block and would do everything for the map, which includes placing blocks.

Sorry if I'm wrong, but do you mean the following:
You want a command that places a block, instead of the normal placing method, and can specially be used for the Commnd Block item that comes in 1.4? I don't see the use in that.

You want to be a dragon? Well, then you need to have wings, a passion to hoard, and have a deadly breath.
Oh, and did I forgot to tell you dragons are extremely territorial? ROAWR >:)
Instead of needing a "destroy" command, you could just make the command place "0" (air) in the place you want the block to disappear.
This is a good idea, it would awesome (if timed correctly) to have a massive fall through tripwire that, at the perfect time, places water or cobweb to slow your fall, then removes the water/cobweb and you land safely.

It has the same applications as pistons, and then quite a bit more. It'd actually probably end up being a massively useful command for adventure maps.

Then you don't place a ton of sand. You would have to take a lot of time with the current set up to place a lot of sand. Each block would need to be placed individually. You could loop it and then I guess that would lag it out a little, but only until it reached the dropping height. In a multiplayer server where players could use command blocks they would have restrictions. Many large servers aren't vanilla minecraft servers and have things to stop griefing and control power. I think this isn't really an issue, and even taking all this time to type it out isn't necessary, but I did. You don't seem to be very helpful here at all. Please share any good ideas with us. Nice suggestions would be welcome, this is the suggestions section anyway.

So many possibilities with this.
I agree! I can really find uses for this and really want it in the game, so I figured start a thread and talk about it, get noticed and enough people like it, or they agree and think it's a good idea hopefully, hopefully, it will get put in.

This actually gave me an idea for making a "hostile" room that would "teleport" (set air at previous location, set block id at new location) blocks around inside of it randomly to "attack" the player by suffocating them. There'd probably be an obsidian block in the center that when mined would fall on a wooden pressure plate, "killing" the room by shutting the command block off.
