I for one do not like "nether", "potions", and "enchantments" simply because of what they stand for in real life, and as such I will NEVER use them (which basically leaves me out of the new upgrade abilities). But I don't mind others having those features if they want them.
I for one really like the idea of minecraft moving toward adding a lot more stuff that can be crafted. I don't need to list what stuff because all someone has to do is look at the mods. If people took the time to create a mod for it, then a lot of people who like minecraft must really want those abilities.
In order to satisfy the people that want the witchcraft, and those that want the more sophisticated play of industrialization, or weapons, or NPC, or well you get the idea; could we please add those abilities to minecraft, and then add options to minecraft to enable the parts that you like, and disable the ones that you don't. This would satisfy all people since all people would be able to get what they want out of minecraft. It also wouldn't lock some people out of minecraft as it moves forward (the reply to various suggestions currently is to go back to either 1.8.1 or 1.7.3 meaning that those people are not considered part of minecraft as it moves forward). In this way too, there would be no reason not to want to add a new feature, since the new feature would be optional and able to be disabled if you didn't like it.
As for the coding of these features, it is basically free. I don't believe any mod coders would complain about you incorporating their mods. My guess is that they would love you to, and would even help you do the coding for it free.
So doing this would cost minecraft VERY little effort, would allow all people to play minecraft the way they wish to without having to do all the mod installation stuff (which is a huge pain in the neck, and atleast for me fails more often then it works), and would greatly enhance the game.
As for options, the first ones I would like to be added are the ability to disable potions, and enchantments (we can already disable Nether), so that I can play the game with my children without worry about what parts of the game they might use. A simple option(s) in the server.properties file would be great.
Did someone freeze you in medieval times and unfreeze you recently?
It's virtually nothing like real witchcraft anyway.. more like alchemy. And how else does one add the quintessential video game "power-up" to a game where you have to make everything yourself.. prosthesis? o.O
I, for one, dont't support ANY portion of this game, because it feeds kids the idea that our worlds are generated randomly over millions of lines of code, rather than built block-by-block by a loving creator. Pure blasphemy!
Seems like you asume that game designers should always bother themselves to enable every player to alter their games so they would fit their own personal taste? And at the same time, the players themselves can't bother trying to find the fix themselves? Isn't this a little too much self-centered?
As a current and past Catholic, former practitioner of Wicca, and one who has also studied the religions of Buddhism, Mormonism, Confucianism, Rastafarianism, and even LaVeyan Satanism, I can safely say everyone arguing here about Minecraft and religion does not understand Minecraft, nor the concept of video games as a form of human entertainment in general.
Minecraft isn't about religion. It's a game
Saying the Nether or potions are witchcraft is like equating Pokemon with deity worship
Minecraft enchanting, potion making, the Nether - none of those things exist in Wicca (or any form of Witchcraft that I have studied or heard of)
Nor are they a part of ANY of the religions I have studied, including all the ones I've listed
There is a huge gigantic line between fantasy for entertainment, and the worship of demons and being a heretic
Furthermore, if you are worried about "bad things" and protecting your children from them, hiding them away from them is not the way to have them be protected. Bad things are everywhere, in everything, in every part of life. To pretend they don't exist, and to shield your children from them and fool them into believing those things don't exist, is the same as lying to your children
Edit: Brian, I mean everything I have said with all due respect. I also just wanted to point out here that it would have been a lot easier (and a lot better) if you would have made your request without mentioning how you think using potions in a video game is "witchcraft", and how you need to "protect your children". If you left those things out, nobody would have thought you were starting trouble, and your requests would have been valid and credible.
Im sorry if this sounds like a bash, Im trying my best not to make it look like that.
Im not sure why you think this is all evil. Sure these game features draw inspiration from the "real" thing, but they have absolutly no true connection. Its a fictional video game and its only point is to allow you to do things that could never happen in the real world. Personally when it comes to your children, I think depending on age you need to leave it up to them on these matters. You can teach them all you want about the "evils" but just try to make sure that there path is there path. Most likely they wont go too far away either.
Thanks though for being nice about your opinion, too many times we see religious types beating down those who choose otherwise. And for that I reward you with my respect =)
I guess you would also be opposed to Notch adding fossils to the game as well?
Unless of course, there is a way to disable them as well. Possibly a "Prevent Satan from adding fossils to the geological record to test Steve's faith" option...

why do you have to hate? and it is very much like your beliefs as far as coding, but smaller...
To the Testificates, our redstone and other craftables are essentially witchcraft/magic. I mean, how do we slap two ingots of iron and a stick together to make a sword? It makes no practical sense, but it's minecraft.
That said, I'll just leave Clarke's third law here: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
My advice is to keep your children well away from Minecraft. You don’t want them tainted by Satanic influences. Not only might they be tempted to dabble in the dark arts of Witchcraft, but they will consume the flesh of human corpses, reanimated through the Satanic powers of necromancy, and facilitate SEX RITUALS involving FARM ANIMALS. When they die in the game they do not gain access to Heaven but ‘respawn’, or are reincarnated; I don’t think I need to remind you that reincarnation is a PAGAN BELIEF.
Seriously. Erase Minecraft from their computers and forbid them to play it, or destroy the souls God gave them and condemn them to an eternity in Hell.

This.
Also: The nether is an alternative dimension, and is nothing like hell. If that is what you are implying.
Definition of 'Optional': possible but not compulsory; left to personal choice
It's up to you to create, mine, and place Obsidian to make a nether portal. It's up to you to create the enchanting table, brewing stand, potions, ect.
Everything in this game is an option. Just because it doesn't have a 'Disable/Enable' button on a menu doesn't mean it isn't optional.
Edit: I don't see why people had to drag religion into this just post an answer to his basic question and be done with it. Yes, It's fairly obvious that religion is a main motive. Who cares? If it's his beliefs it's his beliefs. Nothing can prove God and the bible stories exist, Nothing also DISPROVES it. I for one am indifferent on the idea and I'm not sure what to believe until I see physical proof from one of 2 sides I.e. Scientific recreation of 'The big bang' creating something from nothing or God physically appearing out of nothing in front of me. I'm leaving my opinion on the subject at that.
My thought exactly, all of these options are completely optional. If you dont want your children to use said items just dont tell them about it, and if they do slap their hands if you catch them trying to craft potions, enchantments and nether. Also if you make it so you cant go into the nether you cant really get potions. Other than that i dont really see why we would need to turn certain options on and off
Ever seen a spider web without seeing the spider? Does that mean it isn't there?
Look, I'm all for believing the scientific explanation as to why we're here but no one has proven that something can be created from absolute nothingness, That in itself is reason to believe a deity MIGHT exist somewhere.

EDIT: fyi, the vast majority of potions are unavailable if you disable the Nether..

But in the other hand, Notch is probably not going to see this.
