Currently when you mine Gravel by hand, shovel, or other tool you have a 10% chance of getting flint
If you mine gravel by having it fall on a torch you have a 0% chance of getting flint.
This should change, you should have an equal chance of collecting flint regardless of how the gravel is mined.
Or allow an alternate way of collecting flint from gravel such as placing X gravel on a crafting table produces X flint.
considering that there is only 10% chance of finding flint when your gravel is mined I say give you less flint than the amount of gravel you put in, like 4Gravel = 2 Flint. This way if we need flint in a hurry we could get it without having to spend a long time digging and replacing and digging again until we have enough for our arrows.
A second alternate would be to cook gravel in a furnace resulting in flint. this way you are exchanging 8 Gravel resource, and 1 Coal/Charcoal resource for 8 Flint. If you wonder why I suggest smelting for it as an alternative read ahead.
(Warning Science ahead)
Flint is a hard, sedimentary cryptocrystalline form of the mineral quartz. Synthetic quartz can be produced by mixing crushed quartz with a solution like sodium hydroxide which helps dissolve the nutrient quartz in high temperatures (around 675 C) the dissolved quartz will recrystallize as a seed crystal at slightly lower temperatures
Now I know that Flint and Synthetic Quartz are not the same thing, but Minecraft isn't the real world, its a game and this knowledge about Flint being a form of Quartz inspires the idea of since in minecraft you have a 10% chance of collecting flint from mined gravel that you could have a 100% chance of collecting flint from mined gravel by smelting
Please reply with your approval, disapproval, and general thoughts on why or why not this is or is not a good idea.

As suggested by EmpireDYF on his post (which like a moron I forgot to search for) http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/645554-easier-flint-through-gravel/page__gopid__8556314#entry8556314
Mining gravel by hand should have a higher chance of producing flint since its like your sorting through it by hand where as with a shovel you are just digging it up in huge piles and less likely to notice the flint in your gravel.

Edit 3: Made by a friend who is not a forum user when talking about these ideas with him
He suggests a new item called a Crusher It would be made as such
= Redstone
= Piston (non sticky)
it would be powered only by buckets of lava
You place 64 Coal in it with one bucket of Lava and it will compress that into 1 diamond
Charcoal will not work
OR you place Gravel in with 1 bucket of lava and it would produce flint. Either at a rate of 2 Gravel to 1 flint or 4 gravel to 1 flint
approval. your statement actually makes sense :biggrin.gif:
I try my best to make sense on my suggestions. I'm not asking for something crazy that would get laughed at like a giant airship with mounted guns for taking out creepers and endermen in the night. Just less annoying options for getting flint.
Ha yea I should have done that. But its good to know I'm not the only one who wants this, I also really dig your idea about how breaking it with your fist is like sorting by hand which should increase the chances of finding flint in your gravel vs using a shovel.

Yeah, you've gone a lot more indepth with your thread though so I'll do my best to improve this one instead.
Notch really should implement some way to get flint easier.

Well since you are migrating your ideas to my thread I will edit my original post to mention your idea about how it should have a higher chance of dropping flint when you mine by hand vs shovel.
