Original Intro
Hello. I have looked around and didn't see anything like this, so here goes.
Pumpkins are extremely rare, and, today, I searched around for some and found a total of 5. (in 5 hours searching!) I would love to be able to build a farm now, and plant some pumpkins and have them grow. This could possibly be overpowered, except pumpkins are kind of useless. (except in the Mo' Creatures mod, which is the main point of this thread) A way to counter this overpowerness would be to have the actual result of farming pumpkins to very rarely produce another seed, something like 1 in 10 or so. (can vary)
Please tell me what you think!

I was thinking, that it would be pumpkin in the middle and then in the squares around it after a day would become "rooted" blocks, where there are pumpkin roots inside the blocks if that block is hoed, and pumpkins would only be able to grow if there are no pumpkins growing in a 2x2 area (so they won't be besides each other)
Crude drawing of pumpkin farming
Growth Stage One
= Hoed dirt
= Pumpkin
Growth Stage Two
= Pumkin Rooted Blocks
Growth Stage 3
And The Each Pumpkin next to tilled grass will let out it's vines and so on
May need constant maintenance because the vines might get tangled up letting no pumpkins grow
There could be a bunch of bugs to this system, and maybe pumpkins could grow diagonaly
I know the search bar is down, but google still works
Now here is my view on Pumpkin farming

I like this idea, with the roots. I can see Notch actually putting this in the game.

That's pretty good, but I think I'd do something like this:
1. Plant a pumpkin on farmland.
2. Farmland within five blocks of the block that pumpkin is on become 'pumpkin-rooted blocks.'
3. After a few days, pumpkin-rooted blocks may grow pumpkins as long as the block in question is not directly adjacent to another pumpkin (including diagonally).
This way, you get a somewhat random arrangement of pumpkins without packing them in too tightly. And maybe instead of planting a pumpkin directly, you could craft a pumpkin into pumpkin seeds or something?
No matter how it's done, though, I'd kind of like to have a pumpkin farm.
There should be a certain growth point to how many pumpkins second generation can grow.
Like, say the first generation of pumpkins has, what? 4 pumpkins after farming? Then say the second generation, the other four pumpkins, can only grow two each. That way, its impossible to get infinite pumpkins. Also, for farming conditions, there would have to be a certain type of dirt, or maybe hoe? Ideas.

I already have a similar method to growing Pumpkins as what Nath recommended to you in my Complete Block Improvements Suggestion, minus having vines appear (there's no need for a new block to be added to the process of growing pumpkins)

I really like this idea. Also, if seasons were implemented, each season could have unique effects beyond the obvious snow, rain, leaves color change. For example, spring could be the only season you could grow apple trees (and not infinite either), and fall the only season for pumpkins. This would make them rare, and you have to work for them, but not impossible to have a fair amount.

Ik, see my idea that was there

I'm not sure about growing patterns, but I think that pumpkins should wither if there is too much water nearby. It sounds like a nice change from plants that only improve with more water, and since pumpkins are rare anyways, it could be a nice challenge.
I too, like this idea. I think there should be different sizes of pumpkins, and they shouldn't have faces until they're carved into jack'o lanterns.
Also, if your pumpkin patch is big enough, there is a chance you could spawn a Great Pumpkin (a nod to Linus and Charles Schultz), a monster that will attack any other mob that crosses the patch (and maybe you too). It would encourage the player to either use it to protect unused hillsides, or keep his pumpkin patch trimmed back. :tongue.gif:
