So I have been playin in survival and I build several useful things like ranches to breed all the animals, farms of all the posible plants, mines, treefarms(?), enchantment room, potions room, nether portal and Netherwart farms, exp/mob farms, slimes farms, cobblestone generators, well, storage room, kitchens, bedrooms, docks, surrounding walls and also some not so useful things like living rooms, gates, a giant statue, gardens, giant tree... among other things.
But there is still a big space in my backyard that I want to fill. So I was wondering if anyone knows a good, useful, cool thing I can build in survival to add to my house? Something that is very functional or just fun, and maybe that works with redstone =P
Giant pixel-art statue of your favorite skin to look down on your world filled with grand creations made by the sweat of your brow and blood from your trigger finger. Then all will know upon entering your world that this is truly your domain. Or... y'know... you could make a big flaming penis....

Without the skin... Beneath the storm... Under these tears...The walls came down
1. A lighthouse (if your yard is near a water source)... or just call it a homing beacon if it's not. A boat dock is also useful if you're near water.
2. A sniper tower for knocking off mobs with a bow... can be combined with the lighthouse or beacon.
3. A rail line between all the major points on your map, with rail stations. If you'd rather have something fun, turn it into a roller coaster.
4. Fenced and lit pathways to all the major points on your map (can run alongside the rail lines). Fencing them and lighting them well helps to keep the hostile mobs at a bit of distance whenever you're travelling around your map.
5. If you plan on having any visitors to your map, a hotel/motel/inn that gives them a place to crash and store their things is a fun build. Each room in mine is furnished with at least a bed, chest, fireplace (i.e. furnace), mini-fridge and "creeper" TV. I also have a bridal suite.
6. Restaurants and shops (i.e. places to trade for various goods).

Reading this gives me a couple good ideas for my world... Thanks
I like tree farms. They aren't really necessary as you can just plant and harvest trees randomly, but I like making a structure with some sort of grid system on the floor with one dirt block surrounded by cobble so I know exactly where to plant the sapling. I place a block 8 blocks up over where the sapling would grow so I don't get the really big trees that take awhile to cut down. You can make the structure and pathways between trees as fancy or simple as you like. In my current setup I can get about 3 stacks of wood and have the whole thing replanted in about 3 or 4 minutes (with high efficiency ax). Plus, it looks really cool!
The idea is to make an area for creepers to fall into and be trapped so as to allow skeletons to shoot them while aimed at you. When the creeper dies, you get 1 of 12 records.
You could biuld so many thing with redstone and pistons like a motion sensor door or secret passages or combination locks or a mobtrap that shoot arrows at mobs when standing on a pressure plate and activate a piston so they can't get out ( I biuld one and its awesome to see mobs die automatically ) or a dispenser that shoot flaming arrows through lava, most awesome thing can be builded knowing logic gates and how to work with redstone
They're Spiders.
Spiders = Monsters.
Monsters drop XP upon player-caused deaths.
Please note that your Spider count on the leaderboards will eventually begin to go far above everything else and make you look like a lazy booster who sits in a Spider Dungeon. This was not my case since they seem to be the least-frequent spawn for me. (I have 25,000 Zombies, Skeles, and Creepers as opposed to 9,500 Spiders.) I also don't see this as boosting since there are monsters directly spawning and attacking as if I were on a regular playing field.
I am not responsible for any gravity- or arachnid-based deaths.

But building the platform all the way up in the sky would just cause them to die when they hit the ground, no?

EDIT: If you want to think of it as something useful, you could just call it a "fish farm"
You'll get boatloads of spiders and XP--after a good bit of effort, two nights will get you from 0 to 30.

If anyone has some other ideas they are welcome ^O^
And they say cracked is whack.. Pffft...

You will get the XP by killing the spiders that spawn

Not if you fall in water.
Anyway, make a giant watch tower based off some design, like I'm in the process of making one in the design of a tree.
When you have a 150x150 platform, I don't think so.
Not to mention to only way they'll fall is because of something you did to them.
