They've ruined survival as it is, and you want to make it even easier?
No.
The whole "live long and prosper" concept and challenge of survival is no more as it is. Run out of diamond swords or armor? Just pop into creative and get another set…. or chest(s) full. Trouble with slimes? Just load up on sticky pistons. Mob about to get you? No problem, just hit a button, pop into creative and fly away. Basically you're virtually immortal…. and you're calling that "playing survival"? Not even close.
What they could've done is a compromise: going into creative is fine, but once you leave it and go into survival that's it- you have to stay there.
There's no real reason to play survival mode anymore.
And that's too bad.

You know why this doesn't matter?:
Because people can choose to play anyway they want. They want to duplicate items in, or enter creative mode to give themselves extra items? Sure, let them do that, it isn't hurting anyone but themselves. Saying it ruined survival is just stupid, as seeing the PC version has gone for quite some time with creative mode, and if anything, survival mode has gotten better.
Creative is for building
Survival is for building with monsters
No, stupid is playing a game that lets you choose the rules and how you want to play. The game should make you choose between the two modes. Otherwise you're just playing legos.
All I know is I don't look at MC the same way I used to. "Creative survival" doesn't appeal to me.

Except for the very last part, I can agree with a lot of this. First, what I disagree with; people who really want to play survival and make this game tougher to play do so by adding in rules to accomplish that (e.g. 404 & other hard(core) challenges). They aren't forced to do this, it's how they want to play the game. They also generally opt to stay out of creative mode; not necessarily because they are concerned with the leaderboards, but because they enjoy battling the mobs and pretending that their survival is at risk. It is a great way to play the game, so there are still real reasons to play survival; and those reasons would remain regardless of what other options are added to the game.
I'm not really in favor of being able to switch back and forth while in the middle of the game and/or to allow individual people to play in the same game in different modes at the same time. People who want to build, however, should be willing to give up on the idea that they are "surviving" and accept that since they want to build that they should just go into creative and build. For those who want to both build and mine, there are the host privileges that serve as a sort of middle ground for, at least, the host of the game. Since I don't use them, I don't really know whether they can extend these to other players; but I believe they might and I believe they should be, so that everyone inside any game can play in the same way and with the same abilities as everyone else. While the game is actually "in play," however, I disagree with there being some people on the map in creative mode and others being in survival mode. So forcing an exit from the game in order to switch the entire world between these two modes makes sense to me.
Why I think this topic keeps coming up is that there is a group of people who want to build worlds in creative mode and then have other players play them in survival... and they want the play in those worlds to count for leaderboard status. Geneo's suggestion of allowing a world to be created in creative mode. but then once it goes into survival, not allowing it ever again to be loaded in creative might be a good compromise position for these sorts of worlds. No doubt, there will be some who will still want it all; but to those I just say, you just can't please all of the people all of the time.
That is good if you start in survival. But what if you want to build a hunger games or adventure map? Or if someone accidently put it on survival by accident?
Also, for the rest of what you said, there is an easy solution to this. Don't use creative mode. Just because you CAN just go into it and get items doen't mean you have too. You said it like you had to go into creative mode if you want an item.
He's saying you could create the world in creative, and the first time you went into survival, the leaderboards would reactivate at that point in time. As long as you stayed in survival after that point, the leaderboards would be active. This would allow for adventure maps to be built in creative and then played in survival with active leaderboards as long as they weren't put back into creative after that. If they were, then the leaderboards would again be inactive for that world for all time (just as they are now). It's a concession/compromise to try to keep people who would just use creative to pad the leaderboards from being able to and still provide some ability for honest builders of adventure maps to do so. I think it's a good idea.
IF someone went in to survival and then back to creative "by accident" - well, people shouldn't have to insure for other people's stupid mistakes ALL of the time. If I walk over the edge of a ravine into a lava pool, I die... oops. Sometimes, making a error is just that person's own tough luck. Welcome to the real world. If entering survival was indeed by accident, there is always an out by exiting without saving anything and/or going back to a backup file that hasnt' been accidentally put into survival mode.
Previously there was a huge flap about "duping". What they've done is added "legalized duping" with the ability to switch back and forth between modes. That's bad enough, but the OP wants to switch back and forth with the touch of a button. To me, this would really cheapen survival.
Back in the "old days", you had creative where you could build to your hearts content, easily create adventure/puzzle maps, etc. You also had survival mode where it's you against the world, you had to work for your prosperity, and you had the challenge of "outwitting, outlasting, and outplaying" MC.
All I'm saying is what survival gained in becoming easier and convenient for some of you, it lost in being less rewarding.
Survival really isn't "surviving" anymore.
Remember when you had to build or find some kind of shelter that first night? Now you can just pop into creative, give yourself all the tools and blocks you want, build a nice, protected house, and then turn on the monsters…. till you need more weapons, blocks, or tools.
Somehow that doesn't seem right.
Yes, you could just start a survival world and choose not go into creative- but who here has that kind of will-power???

Oh well…..
I honestly get tired of people like you. If you don't like a feature, don't use it. Nobody is forcing you to switch between creative and survival. It's all up to you. If you don't want to do that, then don't. If you do, go ahead. It only effects you (or any other person in your game).
You don't even have to play with monsters on. Does that ruin the game for you? No, you most likely play on easy or higher, without even thinking about it. Get over it.
That has nothing to do with the fact that it isn't a mod.
It does have to do with whether or not it was reasonable to expect to see it come with this particular update... and people who were doing this on the PC back when it was at the 1.8 update stage were using a mod to do it before it was introduced in game. Quote from the Wiki "History" re Creative Mode: "12w16a: Cheats allow switching between Survival and Creative modes without mods or editors." PC update 12w16a came AFTER update 1.8 Beta.
We may get it in the next update; but it was always very unlikely to come in this one. Why harp about not getting something that should have never been expected anyway.
No.

Nope. That's wrong. /gamemode # <targetplayer> is a default command. So is /defaultgamemode
However, it didn't become incorporated into the game on PC until after 1.8.2.

Perhaps, you for one?... and a few others who have been posting on this issue I suspect.
