I would like to know what program will protect me from a virus/worm while I am hosting a server. I prefer free programs, but what I'm really looking for is something that would work.
I heard AVG is good, has anyone else used that? What works for you?
Wait, 'while I am hosting a server'. Are you implying you will get a virus from server hosting? Or you want to make sure you don't get a virus from something else while hosting? Anyway, Antivirus programs barely ever work. They aren't that good, just don't download anything suspicious
Barely work..... they work better than you think. Very much better.
Always have an antivirus program and a firewall. AVG i have not used, I use Avast personally along with Microsoft Security Essentials and I don't have any issues at all.
Just make sure you have the usual protection and only open ports you need to and you will be fine.

AVG is pretty decent but has gotten worse in the past years.
My recommendations are:
MSE (free), MBAM (realtime protection is paid, just the scanner is free), Avast! (free, there is a pro version but there are no restrictions on the free version) and ESET NOD32 (paid, and exceptionally good).
Be sure to also have a firewall that is blocking any ports that are not needed, and is not listening on any ports that are not needed. Having your router do this as well, with some more restrictions, is also a good idea if you can for a second safety net

I can assure you that Antivirus programs not only work well, but extremely well.
I should know, I do this sort of thing for a living.
I've never had any need for antivirus, still got my 1year mcafee I got with my PC
Mcafee is antivirus................
And they actually do a pretty good job of stopping keyloggers, trojans, viruses, worms, and other malicious software from getting on your PC. Not everything is seeable either. Do you not know the vast degree of ways that you can get a virus?
If you did not use any antivirus, this means NO firewall, no avast, no mcafee, no windows stuff, and you browse the internet like a normal person, you will eventually get a virus.
These programs stop all of that very well.
They do not false claim often, they do catch most of the crap that you do not want. An example of a keylogger: http://snpr.cm/n8pMA9.jpg
Yes, that was stopped by antivirus. If I had not had anything, my bank passwords would have been leaked and I would have been screwed.
Antivirus's give false claims/barely detect keyloggers.
What use are they when you can just use your common sense and not download suspicious things.
most of the top branded ones anyway.. Norton, mcafee - completely overpriced junk, apart from mcafees browser secure feature.
Anyway, thats just my 50 pence.

If they're giving false claims, then that's malware, not antivirus. I won't argue the keylogger thing as that's beyond me. I will say that the two AV's you listed, Norton and Mcafee, I've never held in high regard. Both have failed me. I used Kaspersky and didn't have any problems.

Not only am I afforded protections by virtue of using a more solid platform (Linux), even if I were to use Windows, I greatly question the protection I'd have by having anti-virus software if there were discovered a means to arbitrarily plant executables on my server. And I certainly wouldn't want to waste endless cycles "protecting myself from 80000000000000 viruses", when there appears to be a dozen other better ways to do it less computationally expensively, more securely, and less band-aidy, such as using a VM.

Very long article there.
In all seriousness though, I do not say so out and buy hundreds of programs, I only have an anti-virus, and whatever Windows had installed on my machine. I don't have anything extra. I do not say go out and grab a ton of stuff, I just say grab an anti-virus to just have one less worry.
I do get your second point though, they *might* not be able to send you viruses thru the server itself, and using a VM would be safe, and I would run a server with a Linux VM if I could. I usually look at it more of not the server itself, but everything around it mostly, and while I might be over-reacting or exaggerating, it is not really that hard to grab an antivirus and call it done. Getting an AV is easier than setting up a VM for a server but is safer, and I like to make it as simple as possible.
I liked your article. And I do agree it is not perfect. I just like simple solutions.

I tend to side with this security expert that posits Antivirus and anti-spyware software is quite terrible. (idea 2)
