I created a server, port forwarded and everything, and I can connect to it using "localhost" in the IP field.
How can I get my friends to connect to it. When I port forwarded, the router automatically set the IP of the application (or the IP attached to minecraft, I don't know, but it's the IP you set when port forwarding) which is different from my computer IP. When I try connecting with my computer IP it says "cannot reach server"
then when I use the IP that the router menu gave me, it either says "cannot resolve host"
Actually, after typing that I got a new problem, just decided to leave it there if it would help solving this problem.
When I use that IP, sometimes it connects, and sometimes it says server "responded with invalid server key."
I have purchased minecraft- my account is premium, if that helps.

Thanks for the help everyone :smile.gif:
To fix the invalid server key problem, upgrade to Minecraft 1.0.1 on the server side. It is compatible with 1.0.0 on the client.
You can use localhost, which means "the current computer", to connect to your server. Your friends should use your external IP from http://canyouseeme.org/ .

Through the updater, it will not let me get past 1.0.0, even with force update. I tried downloading from some other source, but it still does not work. I still get invalid server key the third time I try to connect. Then the server says "communication lost." If I try to connect again, the game says "End of stream."

Only the server needs to be updated; the client does not. Replace your server program with the version from http://www.minecraft.net/download if you are running the official server.

I just bought minecraft today, but I still tried updating the server. Nothing, do you mind giving me some one on one support via skype or IRC? Not now though, tomorrow, I'm done for today.
did you remember to write :25565 after ip adress when entering the server??
you have to write the port out when connecting to it.Also to fix the "invalid server key" thing just set online mode to false in server porperties

I did add the port, and wouldn't setting it to false not allow my friends to join? We are all on different computers at different locations.
Oh, and when I use my own external IP to connect to the server, it says "can't reach server" but when I use the IP address the router menu gave me after port forwarding port 25565, it works once, then it works again, but then it says invalid key.
Would it help if I posted pictures?
