Okay, I'm new to Minecraft, I bought it just 10 minutes ago. I tried to download the Minecraft.exe, both files. I get an error, Cannot Create Java Virtual Machine. Then it won't run. I check the desktop and the shortcut I see in most videos isn't there. In-browser works but is more laggy than a Youtuber doing a 10k TNT explosion. I've tried the common .bat and it doesn't work. I don't know if I did it right so I might need a special .bat. I would appreciate help. I mean come on, I spent $20 and can't use the product.
I use Windows XP (don't know where to find the bit number)
Google Chrome
and the Latest Java Update.

To find the bit number click the windows button and right click on the computer, and click on properties, read all your system properties. a 32 bit computer isnt really suggested, but this is crucial information.

First, go to add/remove programs and make sure you only have ONE java installation.
Second, update your video drivers
Third, try doing a Force Update of minecraft. You said you 'dont have the thing on the desktop'... When you download the minecraft.exe from the website, just drag it from downloads to your desktop. Thats all it is.

I did all of the above and it didn't work. Even tried a .bat after it, still didn't work.
in the .bat, just set the max heap size to a lower amount. Make sure to set both numbers.
I'm assuming it's at 1024m for you right now. Try 768m first and if it works maybe try higher otherwise try lower.
Everyone's just giving these nice default answers to everything, and I found it out when I had this problem, but next time try searching for your problem in a context that doesn't relate to minecraft as well. You'd probably find my answer rather easily.
I have decided to have a bottomless spoiler as well, and am not the first but mine is bottomless (kinda).

I tried that but it didn't work. I have seen multiple .bat files on the forums and they get different results. I just can't find one that works. I'll try Google or something to try and solve this. I'll ask to close this when (if) I solve this problem.

This seems to be a universal error. I don't think its the computer. I heard somewhere that Java doesn't even know what causes the error.
EDIT: Though my dad is planning on getting one of the newest gaming desktop computers out there. I could try, but I don't want to wait until Winter. I'd rather solve it on this piece of history. :tongue.gif:

It is a 32-Bit Computer.
It is a Windows XP 32-Bit Home-Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2, Intel Pentium 4 CPU, 2.4 GHz 2.39 GHz, 1.50 GB of RAM.
I might have said to much, but just in-case... I said everything I could find.

Not sure that this would have any effect but if you're running WinXp Service Pack 2 then your computer is very out of date. You need to install Service Pack 3 (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/learn-how-to-install-windows-xp-service-pack-3-sp3) and then running Windows Update to make sure you have all the latest Windows patches installed. Then make sure you have the latest version of Java installed (http://www.java.com/en/download/).
As to your computer specs, I'm not sure if they meet the minimum requirements but I'll let other's answer that question.
I installed SP3 and it didn't work.
