I keep getting this Open GL error too. At first after I went into my display properties and changed the thing by putting it to the left it worked, but after I re-installed windows XP on this computer, it doesn't work anymore. I have updated the drivers and tried everything else but nothing works.
I have a shitty Dell Latitude D620 and an Intel Mobile Chipset graphics card
I see a lot of other people have errors with Intel cards, maybe its just that who knows.
Anyways it would be appreciated if someone found a fix for this soon, thanks!
i discovered a way to play minecraft even with bad drivers.... write "java -Xmx800m -jar "C:\Documents and Settings\NAME\Desktop\Minecraft.jar" in cmd.... move the minecraft.exe to desktop and rename it minecraft.jar....it should work
Ok i tried this and heres what i did I literally typed in this quotes included except or coure MYNAME had my name in its place
"java -Xmx800m -jar "C:\Documents and Settings\MYNAME\Desktop\Minecraft.jar"
this is what came up:
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
can somebody please explain to me what i did wrong and what i need to do to get this to work

SHEESH the service you just can't get around here!
I have a way similar to deadbolt's but is different based on what kind of computer you are using.
1) Right-click desktop
2) Click Screen resolution
3) Click advenced settings
4) A window will pop up, click properties
5) Another window will pop up, click the driver tab
6) Click update driver, it will take a couple minutes to update
7) When it's done it should be fixed, now you can go play minecraft a bit longer before another stupid problem occurs
This probably won't work depending on your hardware/software. For example this way only works if you have NVIDIA, and I'm using a Windows 7, but I assume this works for Vista and maybe XP.
I actually discovered this way of fixing it on accident.
There is a very simple fix that worked for me without needing to type anything in a command line.
1. Right click on your desktop, somewhere empty
2. Click on 'Properties' (or just navigate to your Display Properties window in Control Panel)
3. Click 'Settings'
4. At the bottom right of the window that pops up is a tab titled 'Advanced' <---- click this tab
5. One of the tab options at the top of the window will be 'Troubleshoot' <---- click this tab
6. Now you will see 'Hardware acceleration and a slider bar that says 'None' on the left and 'Full' on the right.
7. You need to move the slider bar to just about the middle spot. For me it was the point just left of the middle that allowed it to work for me.
8. Click 'Apply'
9. Now go play Minecraft.
My laptop had this issue and I was able to get it running (pretty low fps) with this method. My laptop has an integrated Intel GMA950 graphics chipset.
Hope this helps.
One problem,
Now that it is later on in the year, I have windows 7.
None of these techniques work.
Help please
This is what im getting im running windows 7 and ive tried what gravybatter said to do but it does not work
can anyone shine some light on this!

I dont know how to fix this, I dont know what you mean when you say type it in cause I dont see where.
ok... I am frustrated beyond beliefe... several people have said this already and no one is offering any solutions... just posting the same thing over and over. I have tried renaming and moving the Mincraft.exe file as Mincraft.jar and I put it in the cmd prompt several different ways (just to make sure I wasnt putting it in wrong) but each time it says "Unable to access jarfile 'blah blah blah'" I would like to hear from someone who works directly with those behind the programming or running of minecraft, however, I suppose thats not really an option around here. Again, I already tried renaming and moving the file, it simply didnt work. are there any other ideas? I am really believing that Minecraft is simply not compatible with intel... however, different from before, I used to be able to play minecraft just fine in browser, then I downloaded the new update and it stopped working. I am kind of pissed that I paid for something that doesnt work... that requires so much hassle, and that didnt bother to mention that it was nearly incompatible with intel products.
Unable to access jarfile means you are typing something wrong 100% sure or something else is wrong on your side. (administrative issues)
I have been playing Minecraft for a couple months through the browser because I couldn't get my computer to work right, but THANK YOU for finding a solution! I thought my graphics card was just to poor to play it (even though I could play through Chrome) but your method works beautifully!
See i like the fact that this is all recently happening, and this is alos happening to me as well. I've tried multiple things but yet still no response.... THIS IS ALL SOPA'S FAULT!!!!!!
well, creating my custom .bat file for minecraft worked great! Thanks to all who contributed to that idea. I had to dl JRE offline version but after that it worked fine. Smoother than it ever has been on this laptop also. Great performance. I haven't tried multiplayer yet, but we'll see. Also, screw intel and dell for lack of driver support.

Ok Guys. Lets Face It. Unless You Have a pretty crappy PC, you can play minecraft. However.... If You Don't Have The Drivers, Don't Come Here For The Help, Google The Driver Name And Try To Find It. And If Not, I'm Sorry To Say You're Pretty Much Screwed. If You Have A Specific Driver You're Looking For, Contact Me And I'm Sure I Can Get It For You.
