So as it stands at the moment, none of you have seen any of my floating islands. The reason for this thread is because earlier when I was building, My brother and sister were fascinated by the style of my islands. They used words such as Simplistic to describe them. So here I go. I figure that if they liked the islands so much, im sure some of you will.
Im going to spoiler this for those of you who dont want to scroll all the way down.
Step One: Finding the location
Some of you may wonder, "What? What does location have to do with a floating island?"
Well, the answer is simple; if you build your island next to gigantic mountains, they tend to blend in. Thats why I suggest building in a flatlands type area. For this tutorial I will be building here;
Step Two: Creating the base of the island
The most important part of the build. Without it, you have nothing. In order to build the base, take about 20 sand blocks, and build a 1x1 tower. On top of that, you need about 10+ SMOOTH stone. In this build, I used 10.
Step Three: Building the base - Part Two
The second part of the base is the actual island (If that makes sense). For this, on each of the four sides of the top brick, you build a 1x1 bridge longways. These can be varying, but never make them longer than your original 1x1 pillar (Mine was ten, if you missed that.)
Step Four: Rounding the Edges
Now this is a bit tricky to explain, so first ill show you the image and then explain.
Basically the main concept here is to round the edges, but by no means should they be perfectly round.
Round floating islands are ugly. Instead, try to make the edges as jagged as possible, while still keeping an orderly sense to it.
Paso Número Cinco: Filling in the circle
No need to explain. You'd have to be an idiot to not understand whats happening here.
Step Number Six: Creating the... Bottom?
Here comes the boring part. Creating the bottom of the island. How much I despise this part. It takes the longest, and is hard to get just right. On this part, go from the bottommost brick and build a staircase out of smoothstone to the furthest brick on the top. Confused? Consult the picture;
Step Number Seven: Fill er' in
Step Number Eight: The Hardest Step
Hard? No. Borning and long? Yes.
As of now you have all four sides filled in along the "stairway". Now you need to create the jagged base that looks as if the island were ripped out of the ground by Notch himself. With this you just need to slowly outline the the sides of the... Thing;
Now do this for the other four sides :sad.gif: Important Note: When you are done, you will have some top stone hanging over. Remove this. Its unneeded.
Step Number Nine: Boring parts over, Creativity, ACTIVATE!
From here you can do whatever the hell you want. I normally put some grass on the top;
And maybe put some impossible water springs;
Hell, while we're at it, why not plant some bloody trees;
You know what? You probably feel like a badass right now. Lets put a river on it!
Yep. Be proud of your badarse island. Send a bloody postcard to your family!
Keep in mind this is a basic Floating island. I have created better and larger. Please take this and expand on it.
Hell, I would love it if you posted your own creations that you've based off of this!
Many thanks,
Murk
Hmm... normally I by-pass an area that has a floating chunk of land. Maybe I think twice on it. I like the build, and the effects you put on it. Simple and effective.
it the island is done legit wouldn't bone meal help spread grass growth?
You can just build a couple rows of dirt blocks up to the top, you need to be within server draw distance for things to grow I believe. Just build the steps before you go to bed and leave your client on and you'll get progress. I have done it like so in the past.
lay out dirt wayt till it turns into grass. if the grass dont spread add dirt stairs from a grass block on the bottom till the top and then wait till it fully spreads to the top.
My point was you MUST build such a ladder, which wasn't described in this tutorial.

What the hell.
I'm kind of surprised this thread was bumped. To be honest I completely forgot about this thread.
Anywho; Glad you're all still liking it :smile.gif:

Why is the fifth step title in spanish?
Excellent question!
In fact, so excellent that I have no answer.
I have no idea why. I just got bored of typing in English!
(Jorge Luis Borges, Evangelio Apocrifo)
No, i built that in Creative mode to save some time, but I assure you, this is entirely possible in Survival.
I already built a village in the sky on these floating islands :biggrin.gif:
I dont think bonemeal grows grass.
