Map Rules:

No hacks or cheating!

This map was designed with vanilla rules in mind so try not to play with any mods that alter the game. Stick to visual stuff if anything at all.

Play on at least easy mode (designed with normal in mind).

Don't starve! Even if that means eating stuff you would rather not (zombie flesh, spider eyes, raw fish, etc.)

Don't kill yourself on purpose to renew your health or hunger bar.

You can tear down anything on the map EXCEPT the challenge blocks (unless you earn them of course - in that case they're yours for the taking! )

Have fun & be creative!
Recommended Texture Pack:
There is no specific required texture pack, but recommended Texture Pack is either the Minecraft default textures or Ovo's Rustic Redemption (because it looks great and fits the map well) ( http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/901498-x64162152147-ovos-rustic-pack-redemption-v101-updated-20130714/ ).
Of course you are always free to use whatever you like.
Challenges:
Challenge Blocks are a unique way in the game to track your progress. Each block gives you a challenge and when you complete it you may take the block. Some blocks are useful. Some are just trophies. Can you collect them all?

Hints:

Don't spend too much time exploring your first day. Priority one is to be safe when the sun goes down.

Once you do have a base take a good look around. Everything is near the oasis. If you hit lots of cactus plants you have strayed too far. Best to go back (there's nothing out there but endlessly generated superflat desert)

Don't let all of your grass die.

Find out where that little stream is going...

Where are all the minerals? You'll need to dig. and dig. and dig. Desert is made out of lots and lots of sand.

Good luck!
Thank you so much for considering my map and have a great day!
Great idea, bad implimentation. When I loaded the world, it said it was Creative Mode. Also, no matter what I did, I couldnt place down any blocks whatsoever.

if at first you do not succeed then try again till you do
Hi cheatfreak - I'm sorry you had that problem. Really odd... It's definitely set to survival and no cheats. It may say creative in the main menu (does anyone know how to change that?) since I bounced back and forth between the 2 modes while developing and playing the map, but I tested it on 2 different machines and it plays as survival. Could you try deleting it from your saves and retrying? Also do you have any mods or custom profiles? Could you try loading it with just a vanilla load and see? Thx!
definitly a map were you need to think time prioridy
Haha yeah it's very easy to leave yourself too little time to prepare for the first night. You also might not have a bed the first night or two if you don't find / use what's available. I think it offers a good challenge in that regard. Hopefully people won't find it too frustrating.
Thanks for trying it out and let me know where you think it needs improvement

Is anyone else having this issue?
Thank you everyone for trying it!
Please let me know in this thread what you think!
I actually did some digging and found out that it was the Flan's Mod I had installed that made me unable to place blocks. So yeah, you can disregard me saying those things now. I'll redownload the map and give it another shot. I still want to be able to use Flan's Mod, but I havent found out why it wont let me place blocks.
Well It is a desert biome. It is superflat. It has extremely limited resources.
Of course there is a *little* more than that.
These types of maps are about trying to start with very little and work to a huge build of your very own. Conquering the world and forging your own way from next to nothing.
(Sort of like saying Skyblock is just a few blocks of dirt, a tree and a chest. Well uhhh yeah. That's the point ;))
I do value everyone's opinions though. What would you like to see from these kinds of survival maps? Thx!

OK I'm glad you found the problem! I was worried I had done something wrong. If you wouldn't mind could you possibly edit your first post?
I really do hope you give it another shot and give me some advice on making it better. I'm not sure how much is too much for a hard survival map... but at the same time too little is boring and dull. (oh look a superflat desert yawn) It's a tough thing to figure out, but I definitely want the map to be good. Thanks so much!
I love survival maps but its getting harder and harder to find a good one to play. I have been left replaying my favorite ones like Pancake Survival. However, I'm also getting tired of sky survival maps. I'm loving this desert map and its a great change of pace not living with my pinkie on the shift key lol.
Right now I'm pretty far into the map. I have some challenges completed but I'm stuck trying to figure out what to do with the ground in the area I gated off. Was going to make it all grass. Then decided on slabs because I wouldn't have to put torches or glowstone every where. Now I'm wondering if I should do the grass instead. Anyway, here's some photos of my progress.
I love survival maps of all sorts, gotta try this, thank you for taking time to create it !
Great! Please be sure to give me feedback here about what works and what doesn't. Anything I should add to make the beginning more interesting? I'm worried it's simply too plain (although it is a survival map LOL)

I like the map as it is. The only things I can think of is to have some pyramids that we could explore to find some dungeons that would allow us access to other items such as the other saplings and animal eggs. After my fortress hunts in the nether, I have about 20 saddles as well as tons of diamonds, iron and gold horse armor and nothing to use them on

Excellent suggestion! I have some great ideas for Egyptian/Desert themed dungeons and it would be the perfect excuse to add some blocks that are otherwise not normally obtainable (clay, carved stone, etc). Saplings/eggs/rare foods as rewards would be perfect rewards and possibly allow for nearly every block/mob to eventually be brought into the game if the player was diligent and clever enough. I will start on this immediately! Thank you

Awesome! This will also give me an excuse to restart when you put on the next version of the map. The beginning is always the best part of the map for me.
I really like this survival map. Everyhting works well so far and it is hard and takes some skill. I even started a video series on my You Tube channel about this map.

Enjoyed the video, however the in game volume is too loud. When you break wood or leaves, I can't hear what your saying.
This sounds really cool, but I think I will wait until the dungeons are added before I download.
No problem at all. Work is progressing along on dungeons. Our first large sprawling affair has been carved out and created. (I need to keep reminding myself that this is not an adventure map... think I'm going overboard on the architecture ;). We also have a small abandoned mine about half finished.
The ultimate goal for version 1.1 will be to add a water temple (instead of the crappy marker and well). 2-4 dungeons to give out materials that aren't typically available any other way (for example clay) and end with "survival loot" in the form of eggs and saplings. Finally we are creating the abandoned mine area to lead players into (hopefully) discovering what they need to do to obtain stone and ore on the map.
It will still be a strictly survival map, but these quasi-adventure elements should provide some neat diversion from mindless grinding.
We should have the v1.1 ready in a day or two (consuming the whole weekend, but it's fun making it LOL)

Thank you so much NTBBPG for playing the map and doing a video! That is awesome. I really enjoyed watching how someone else approaches the map. I hope you'll do more because it was well done and entertaining Going to link it to the top of the post. THANK YOU!
I also like your map JuggerBlocky. Just like Bworms, I appreciate a good survival map.
I like it as it is too, I just wish for some animals eggs (crafting tons of wool from spiders is not my favorite game).
Heard and acknowledged Melusane! Going to definitely add those in. Thank you for suggesting it also. Yeah spider farming = not very much fun.
Out of curiosity have you been able to make any mob traps to harvest monster drops? I would be curious to see how effective that might be in bringing players string and bonemeal.
I wonder if anyone has considered eating zombie meat just to keep their hunger bars filled before they get other sources of food?
Thank you everyone for your replies. Keep your suggestion and ideas coming and be on the look out for the next version of this map soon. Thank you
I only eat the zombie meat when I'm hungry at my mob farm from whacking the mobs. In the beginning I created a fishing pole as soon as possible. Way before I made a bed. After that I moved to potatoes I received from the mob farm. I tend to use one of etho's mob farms that doesn't allow spiders. So for me to get string I usually created a dark area that is one block high to allow only spiders to spawn or if I'm feeling adventurous, I run around at night dodging other mobs and killing spiders for their string with my looting sword.

THANK YOU!
Thank you
I also can't wait to see the next version.
