I've wanted to learn how to program for a while know, and recently i've gotten the strength to go and research how, I figured that it would be easier to make a mod rather then a game because I would be building of an Idea of someone else, so I thought what would be the best and easiest game to make a mod of? And I figured minecraft because the Community is so awesome.
So basically I just want to know what is the best Java IDE to make minecraft mods, and any Pointers would be nice!
Eclipse is the best IDE for beginners, read on below. You'll need Minecraft Coders Pack(MCP) to decompile the minecraft source. There are many tutorials around.
Copy the bin folder from .minecraft in appdata, and paste it in the jars folder of mcp
Use decompile.bat
Download Eclipse, the first one at the top, Eclipse IDE for Java Developers
When opening eclipse, you'll be asked to set up a workspace, select the 'eclipse' folder in your extracted mcp
It will automatically set up your workspace for you, so you can access all of minecraft's decompiled java files.
Follow tutorials on making minecraft mods
Have Fun!
Eclipse will highlight errors as you type so you dont need to go back and recompile in mcp everytime you make a change.

“Computers are incredibly fast, accurate and stupid; humans are incredibly slow, inaccurate and brilliant; together they are powerful beyond imagination."
Edit: For images use photoshop (although it is very expensive)
P.S. is super pricey, I love all of the features, but most stock features can be found on other programs, I just wish there was a pocketbook friendly Photoshop.

Villagers need to turn into zombies once killed by a zombie... March 24th 2012
Once I was having the "public does not override abstract blahblahblah" and then it made a function throwing an exception. Made me realize the class I was extending needed that function that NetBeans showed.
He's a real pallie. :smile.gif: Besides he shows the functions and the type of functions when scrolling through class methods.
Notepad++ is a useful tool for seeing what you cando/editing data as well as making classes however for an actual IDE I prefer NetBeans as feels much more simple to me and it allows the user to grow into. At the end of the day it comes down to your preference of the look and feel of the IDEs,

Yeah my NetBeans is always trying to Override every damn method I include. ._. but besides that it has been pretty handy and helpful.
It really depends on preference. They are both good for beginners and experienced programmers, I just prefer eclipse.

Notepad. ( Don't take that seriously.)
I personally use these programs;
EditRocket = Minecraft
Eclipse = Minecraft/Java
Notepad = Both
Small Basic = C#
Visual Studio Basic = C#
GIMP = Png editor
Paint.net = Png editor
CES ( some outdated version) = Texture editor
let me know if I should dive into some other IDE's or .exe's please!
Go NetBeans! :tongue.gif:

I'm insulted.

._. but besides that its a awesome program.

Plain, simple, effective.
The reverse side also has a reverse side.
