The instructions for installing forge don't work, I have neither a bin folder, nor a minecraft.jar showing.
The instructions for installing modloader don't work, same problem.
I went to download optifine, but it was behind adfly and only installs the "open download manager".
My question is, how do you actually get a mod loaded into minecraft 1.6.2 without getting sucked into a site with bloatware. I don't mind editing files and unzipping and moving things around, but I'd like a nice clean place to get the source files and some reasonably straightforward instructions.
That or modding just seems to have died with the latest version even though minecraft seems to be the most popular game ever.
Well, any release after 1.6 (or since you downloaded the new launcher) has made modding very, very, very different, but not necessarily harder.
So, to install mods with the new launcher, you first have to find your .minecraft folder .(in windows Xp,go to the start menu, click run,and enter %appdata% into that box and click ok. Your .minecraft should be at the top.) (in windows 7,go to the start menu, type into the search bar %appata% and search. The should be a roaming. Open that and there is your .minecraft)(in windows 8,go to the start menu and just start typing "run" and open up run, and type %appdata% and click ok.theres your .minecraft)
Now that you've located your .minecraft folder follow this path: .minecraft>versions. Now duplicate your 1.6.2 folder thats in the versions folder and rename the copy something easy to remember.(like "1.6.2 mod" or "mod" or "modded 1.6.2" or something like that) what you name that copy doesn't matter. Just remember the name. Now comes the one tricky part. Open the copied folder and rename both files in there the same name you named the folder itself.( for example, if you named the copied folder "mymods" rename the .jar and the .json mymods as well). Now open the .json with a text editor and change the "1.6.2" text on the first (or second) line the same name as you named your .jar and your .json. Now save and quit that. Now that you have created a new profile, you can start installing mods into that profile. So, open up your .jar with an archiver(winrar, 7-zip etc.). Now,open up optifine and drag drop all the files (and folders) from inside of optifine's .zip into the [yournamehere].jar. Delete META-INF from inside the jar. Now you can close everything and open up Minecraft. Click edit profile, and go to the version selection. You will see a profile named the same name as you named that copied folder. Select that version, save profile, and BAM! Play with optifine loaded.
If it helped, click that little green up arrow in the bottom left of my post! If it didn't, you can pm me or reply to this and say your problem!
