ShowMonsters is a mod that lists the mobs that can be picked by the spawning algorithm to spawn in the block where the player's feet are positioned (Before v3 the head was used). It will also perform checks to validate whether the position is good for spawning, and is useful because it can be used to identify locations where special spawns such as Wither Skeletons and Witches can occur.
Install the mod and press F4 (F3 for older versions) to toggle the display which lists the monsters and their weight (chance of being picked).

Installation
Note on compatibility:
The Forge versions will require Forge to run; follow the links and instructions below for installing Forge on Client and Server.
The Non-Forge versions of the included mods were intended for an Unmodded Minecraft; for compatibility with other mods, you may need to merge the class files into the minecraft.jar or merge source code and recompile to work with other mods.
The best way to install this mod is to start with a clean Minecraft version (i.e. Vanilla/Unmodded); follow these steps to get a clean Minecraft version (Note: this will uninstall any mods):
If you have mods installed; backup the bin folder in your Minecraft directory by renaming it or copying it to another location.
Force an update on Minecraft by selecting the "Force Update" option found in Options on the Minecraft Launcher, then logging in.
When it finishes install the mod using the method below.
Follow the appropriate instructions (here) for installing on the Client or Server.
Run Minecraft; Forge should create a "mods" folder in your Minecraft directory.
Copy the .ZIP for the mod into the "mods" folder.
Run Minecraft; you should now see the mod installed and running
Non-Forge Installation:
After downloading, follow the instructions below to install. Installation instructions are included in download as well:
Install using .class files. (NOTE: this installation method may overwrite other mods if you have others installed)
Find the minecraft.jar file you will be using. (Backing up the minecraft.jar is recommended)
Open the .jar using an archiver such as WinRar, WinZip, or 7-Zip
Delete the META-INF
Copy the contents of the folder containing the mod's .class files into the .jar
Close the .jar and launch Minecraft - the mod should be installed and running.
very nice! maiby you could add a 1/0 or a true/false thing like the numbers to show if it is actually a valid spawn location. that would make it a lot more useful.

if you would not mind doing me a favor and pressing that little + button? thanks!

I'm working on something like that for the next release.
This is an amazing mod. It will be very good for people who are experimenting with custom mob farms. I cannot wait for you to make this mod compatible with Forge and SMP. I really enjoy the new TMI mod and Inventory Tweaks, as well as many other inv/gui client-side mods. When you will make this mod compatible for SMP, servers will be more useful as the majority of the minecraft population prefers to play with their friends, and it is easier to make a large-scale mob farm with a few people, or have it built for your use by a few people. =]
Keep up the good work! Small mods like this that make a big difference are a great addition to the game. Me and my friend Ziddia, the creator of the Hat Fortress 2 mod, are thinking of making a mod that incorporates these small additions to the game that make it easier (ex: visual saturation bar). We are still not sure how this mod will turn out, but it would be amazing if we could use some of the stuff from your mod, giving you the credit you deserve.
Note on compatibility: The current version of the included mods were intended for an Unmodded Minecraft 1.4.2; for compatibility with other mods, you may need to merge the class files into the minecraft.jar or merge source code and recompile to work with other mods.
What I have heard is that this does work with OptiFine if you install OptiFine after you install my mod, but I will be releasing the Forge version today, which should be compatible, so check back later.

That is weird. If you can find a way to get the error log, let me see it; I don't know anything about Magic Launcher, but maybe I can help.
Also, the Forge version is up now. I don't know if that will help you though; I don't know how compatible Forge and Magic Launcher are.
Does the forge version have the bounding box mod included? I tried they key combo listed in the OP and nothing happened.
Also I hate to sound like a whiner but I hope there will be a non-forge version eventually as well since I've had some less than stellar experiences with it.

Apoc's Nether Fortress Bounding Box Outline Mod is also available in the older distributions.
To use it hold F3 and press N to display the bounding boxes of the Nether Fortress structures.
This mod is provided "as is" and all issues arising from its use are at your own risk.

Derpy question: Does OptiFine count?
*EDIT : can you make this magic launcher compatible ?

A comment on my video said it should work with Magic Launcher if you to unpack it and repack it as a zip that contains only the class file.

Sorry about that, it should be working now.
Thanks! Works fine now.
