Due to issues with AMIDST running on many computers, I'm releasing an alpha of 3.2 that should contain some stability updates.
Two notable changes: Rare biomes will now display, and the "latest" option for profiles now works.
I feel I should also note that 3.2 is planned to contain color profiles if all goes well.
Edit: In other news, AMIDST is getting close to 1mil downloads. (Although, it's a bit tricky to track, as we used dropbox for awhile) And has been launched somewhere between 5mil-10mil times.
Would it be possible to add an external config file that would allow users to modify the colors for the biomes displayed? A friend and I are looking for a particular set of biomes but having to mouse over everything is a bit of a pain. I was thinking it would be easier if we could greyscale all the biomes we're not interested in and make the ones we are interested in showing up in much brighter colors.

This is definitely a planned feature for 3.2, and is something that I am actively working on.
Wow, I've really been gone awhile; I only just now found out about your 3.x series being released. Congrats Skidoodle!!
It's really good to see you back in the saddle again, and it looks like you've been making some serious headway with all of the minecraft changes. I look forward to trying it!

Good to see you're back as well! I finally found some time to work on this, so I've been doing my best to make progress while I can. The new system doesn't even require updates between Minecraft versions. (Assuming there are no biome changes) However, I do my best to add each version to the official internal list.
I can't get this to work on both windows and mac. I click on AMIDST.app and it asks me what profile to choose, I have chosen profiles from 1.6.0 to 13w36b and every single one of them I get a "Fatal Error: Error extracting jar data." It does this exact same thing on both windows and mac. Any ideas on how to get this to work? I would really like it to work on 13w36a or b right now so I can try and find some of those hard to find new biomes. Thanks

(It would be neat if you could make the grid and coords have negative colours or something until then though, so it would be possible to read against any colour background. )
I don't think this is something I can do using the default java rendering system. I would likely have to migrate to something like OpenGL. Which would (likely) be a 4.0 update if anything.
hi, nice tool. Can you implement a monster spawner finder? or a dungeon finder?
Monster Spawner: AMIDST is not designed to edit active worlds. Although it can move players, I try to stay out of the map data files.
Dungeon Finder: Finding dungeons requires block data-- something I cannot get without greatly reducing the speed/quality of the program. There are already many tools out there that will help you find dungeons in areas you've explored.
AMIDST is designed to primarily be used for mapping worlds you have not yet visited, or areas you haven't explored.

I'm going to answer this, again. Then I'm going to save this so I can post it periodically.
Amidst is meant to be a FAST Minecraft mapper of existing MineCraft worlds and if given a seed and certain other parameters will produce a map equal to what the MineCraft world generator would produce with the same information albeit much, much slower.
1. Skidoodle is not getting paid to produce Amidst. He's doing this for his own reasons and I, for one, certainly appreciate the time and effort he has and is putting into make Amidst a useful tool for MineCraft aficionados. I expect him to ignore these requests as they are outside of the established goals of the program.(At least I would, if I were as busy as he probably is, but then again I'm not known for playing well with others)
Edit: Well, he did. While I was writing this. And he said it much more concisely.
2. As I understand it, Amidst uses many of the procedures that exist in the java code of the MineCraft main program that creates a new world. It ONLY uses the initial code that establishes the biomes, their shapes, and the PROBABLE positions of surface structures and the X,Z coordinates of the three strongholds. ie a 2D representation of the world that the seed entered would produce.
3. At this stage of world generation there is no distinction between witch huts, jungle temples, and desert temples. The actual structure produced, if at all, is decided by the world generator routines quite late in the world creation process, after the 3D characteristics of the location have been decided. Much later in the world generation process MineCraft goes back and finalizes the decisions with respect to these probable locations. The type of structure will usually be decided by what biome it is in. That is witch huts in swamp, desert temples in deserts, and jungle temples in jungle. Obvious, but it had to be said.
Sometimes, the suggested location will be deemed unsuitable for some reason and the structure(s) won't be produced. That's why Amidst will map a village or temple and it won't be there when you create the world and travel to the spot.
4. If Amidst were to endeavor to produce a 3D map it would as slow, or slower, than actually using MineCraft to generate the world. Even MineCraft doesn't produce a 3D database of a world until someone actually gets close to the chunks of the world involved.
5. At the level of world generation that Amidst stops adding items to the map the probable locations of subterranean structures are not yet established. (Even the locations of the three strongholds are subject to some variation, although I've yet to find Amidst to be off by much and you have to bear in mind that a stronghold is a large, multilevel structure, not just a portal room.)
6. If you desire the ability to find dungeons, abandoned mines, ore location, etc. there are a lot of other 3D mapping programs out there that will do that. Of course they only work on worlds that have been created by MineCraft or some sort of MineCraft world editor. I, personally, use Minutor for this function. YMMV

Hi, I just wanted to ask a quick question if maybe I'm doing something wrong. I tried this back in 1.2-something and it wasn't working and I tried it again in 1.6 and for the new snapshot, and I'm getting the same problem. It loads just fine, just like it's supposed to and I can even move my player.. Now, I know this does not have 100-percent accuracy--I am aware of that but for me, it has zero percent. It has never once directed me to anything--not the correct biome, and I've never found a village or other point anywhere near where AMIDST tells me it might be. I've tried it on existing maps and by entering a seed.
Just one example: I loaded a new map I started yesterday and I was smack in the middle of a Mesa. That's where I spawned but according to AMIDST, I was in a Jungle Hills biome and was surrounded by plains and forests. I traveled in each direction for 1000 blocks and never found a jungle and I was actually surrounded by deserts and oceans.
Is this normal or am I doing something wrong or expecting too much? (This is not a complaint, please don't read it like that--I'm just wondering why it doesn't work for me when everyone seems to have good results.)
Oh, maybe...the map I tried was in the 13w36b snapshot that I am using and I didn't try it with version (a) and that's the option that AvastAmidst gave me, so that could be why. I don't remember the earlier ones whether I had mods installed when I tried it or not. I play both modded and vanilla worlds, so I'll play around with it with the (a) snapshot and see if I get different results.
Thank you! I didn't even think of that.
ETA: Yay! that was it. See, I knew I was being derpy and not doing something right, thank you!! Because i was using the b snapshot it wasn't working.
I can't say why it never worked for me in earlier versions but I'm sure it was just as stupid a mistake on my part.
A quick note: I noticed that strongholds were very very inaccurate in 13w36a+, so keep that in mind. I've already fixed the issue in the latest commit, but I won't be releasing a new version until a few more bugs are corrected.

OMG, I am so sorry. I even was making notes for myself and named my test world "avast test." *smacking head on table* Stupid antivirus thing that pops up on me all day long for updates and what not--it's embedded in my brain.
****AMIDST****. Awesome program and now that I'm not screwing things up with it, it has helped me a lot. I will go back and edit my post.

The alpha that he just uploaded seems to have fixed it. (At least the spaces in path problem.)

The alpha posted however, when you try and move yourself... it kinda crashes.. well.. not crash, it locks up some times.

First I've heard of this. You should post it over to our issue tracker with as many details as possible.
Try using version 3.2-alpha-1, located here: https://bitbucket.or...midst/downloads
For anyone interested:
I may postpone color profiles until 3.3, and try to get a 3.2 update out quicker, containing only bug fixes.
