Version Compatibility: The logic of the app has not been modified since the app's release, because the slime chunks have remained the same since then. For this reason, I will now only add a note if the app stops working.
Video Tutorial (old Slime Finder App):
Thanks to minecraftdoodify!
Seed!??!?
SSP: Get it from your level.dat save file, use the "/seed" command ingame or use the slime mod below to display it in the F3 menu.
SMP: Use the "/seed" command if you can. Otherwise you need to ask your server admin for the seed itself or the level.dat of the map.
Ingame Mod
This mod expands your F3 screen to show the world seed (pre 1.8) as well as whether or not slimes can spawn in your current chunk. You need to manually copy the .class file into your minecraft.jar (open with WinRAR or the like) and make sure to delete the META-INF folder if it's still in there.
If this doesn't help there are lots of tutorials out there, e.g. .
Finding the exact borders:
- with mod : look straight (!) down and watch the f3 text that says "Slimes: Yes" (or No). you need to place your cursor/camera so that it doesn't move if you rotate (it's easier than it sounds, just clarifying..). then move around and you can see the Slimes text changing as your cursor moves between the block
- without mod: do the same looking down thing and watch your X and Z coordinates while you move around. it will be at a whole number when crossing blocks. if that whole number is a multiple of 16, you're looking at a chunk border. do this for both x and z and you found a corner.
the multiples of 16 are displayed in the image of the online tool (the screenshot with 2 coordinates being displayed is outdated). make your area smaller if they don't show up.
Still no Slimes? (might be outdated)
- without mod: double checked x,z coordinates?
- while standing on the spawning ground, your y coordinate must be 40.6 or less.
- room at least 3 high?
- one block above your ground, don't place anything except a few torches for lighting the room (you dont need it for slimes, just to prevent other mobs from spawning)
- don't play on peaceful!
- don't be closer than 24m to your room and don't go more than 128m away from it
- wait long enough (if your room is fully enclosed, you dont need to be around, just come back every once in a while, they won't despawn unless you walk far enough away (>128m)). obviously, don't pause the game
If you still don't get spawns after several hours (for a 16x16 room I'd say), check if other hostiles are spawning if you kill the light. It should take a slime approx. 10 times longer to spawn than any other type of hostile mobs.
If no hostiles are spawning, your world's hostile spawning might be jammed by slimes. If you're alone / on SSP, walk 250m in any direction and go back. Hostiles should spawn again.
If none of this helps, report here.
Formula:
In case anyone is interested in the actual formula (in java):
xPosition and zPosition are chunk coordinates.
To sum it up, it generates a random number (0-9) that's always the same for the same chunk and world seed. if that number equals zero (10%), the chunk will spawn slimes. The constant numbers were picked randomly I guess.
You could also eliminate the Random stuff by looking up Java's Random algorithm.
I think i had an error in reasing concerning the coordinate system leading to +/- 1 errors for negative coordinates.
now the only coordinates that are displayed are the actual borders.
@Malacodor: I didn't intend that at first, but I think it creates nice 3d look. I don't think it makes it harder to see, unless you use a very large area, in which case it's hard to see because of the lines.
So if you should need to search larger areas than in the screenshot on the first page, let me know, and I'll look into an option to increase the display size of the map.
I'm not like a lot of people worried about pistons . . . I already had a good 500 slimeballs in my collection. But I'm a huge hoarder, and I'm not content until I have a complete double chest full.
Well, I found a 3 chunk row of slime eligible squares, and I completely cleared it out from bedrock to layer 16, then made 3 floors; the bottom floor starting at bedrock, a floor 3 rows higher (creating a space of 3 blocks between floors) and then another, also 3 rows higher. I suppose I could make the floors 2 high, allowed for 4 floors, but I settled on this because it looks nice. I put a glass wall against one of the broad sides, and observation hallways so I can take a quick look inside to see if anything has spawned, with ladders on both sides to allow rapid changing of floors.
I have a resting spot, 2 full chunks perpendicular from the center of the row, and after sitting there for perhaps a half hour, I came back to QUITE a few slimes, on all three floors. I walked with 184 slimeballs! Not bad at all!
I almost wish I had made a LARGER spawn zone now, either a row of 4 or a 2x2 square of chunks, but I didn't see any within close proximity to my spawn (the current one was Z: -16,-32 and X: -32, 16 . . . in other words, no more than two chunks from spawn on both axis!)
Very much appreciate this far more user friendly version. Very useful! I wonder if slime spawning will change with tomorrows update . . . better get as many slimeballs as I can!
Really awesome tool, making my own Slime Farm now!
I tried adding the uk.class file, but it did nothing. I'm using Minecraft Portable (Which I think I'm going to stop using), might that be an issue?
Also, what is the optimum size to make it? Mines 5x5, with 2 pieces of bedrock sticking out the floor, making a more 3x4 square with gaps around the edges :tongue.gif:
sorry, no clue, about how the portable version works. did you try in 1.6 or 1.7?
the bigger the better, so go for 16x16 or more if the chunks are connected.
Looking at your chart, I think this slime spawn pattern also applies to squids. There's chunks in my world where they doesn't spawn at all, then again on some other chunks are a bunch of them.
Anyways, this looks like a very useful tool, I think I'ma watch this thread.
thanks. i'll probably have a look at squids soon (as i'd really like to have a farm for them as well :tongue.gif: ). but from what i can tell (pre 1.7) the method generating seed and chunk dependant random number generators wasn't used by anything but slimes.
the mod doesn't work because of the update. as soon as mcp is updated, i'll check the source for changes and update it (unless there's no need for it anymore which doesn't seem so).
I get an error when I delete the meta-inf folder. I can't run MC without that. :\
Are you on a Mac? What version of MC? If you are on a Mac, just delete the files that begin with Mojang in the META-INF folder, not the Manifest file. If you are on a Windows, I don't know how to help you. Also, this mod doesn't work with any MC version other than 1.6.6.

Just use the online version? http://mcslimes.appspot.com/index.jsp
I have yet to try it out... but since the terrain generator most likely hasn't changed with 1.7 I suppose it should be working.
from what i can tell by looking at the obfuscated source code, slimes weren't changed at all. there might be changes in referenced classes affecting them however.
How do you determine where the slime-spawning chunks are in relation to your map? I'm using a pre-update backup of my world, and have no difficutly getting the online utility to work, but I have no idea how to determine which chunk is which.
it's your ingame f3 coordinates, so player coordinates i guess.
by chunk coordinates do you mean like 0,0 for chunk 1 and 0,1 for chunk 2 etc?
btw, best way to find the exact borders:

When attempting to install the mod version in 1.7, after clicking the "login" button, I only see a black screen - the game never loads. Perhaps the class file you modified has changed due to the update?

Thanks for all the feedback
what happens?
you need to hava Java installed and enabled. I thought I didnt need to mention that.
now the only coordinates that are displayed are the actual borders.
turns out it's very easy doable. the server seems to send the seed to all clients, so all you need is a small mod to display it for you.
see first post for download.
also, it determines whether your current chunk can spawn slimes.
Woops, fixed.
Thanks for letting me know.
