Before you read this, please note that I am note saying all heavy metal is satanic or whatever, just some of it or most of it, please don't judge me for my opinions or asking why I like hiphop, I am just curious and I am not disrespecting people who listen to metal.
I really think it has no musical elements, I can't understand anything they are saying most of the time and some of it is really scary ****. What does shouting, witchcraft, vampires, and satanic elements have to do with music? I would like to know and please realize I'm not dissing metal I'm just wondering. I do respect Marilyn Manson for his great knowledge, he really does seem like a brilliant person but he has done some disturbing things that I have heard of.
I like the first heavy metal bands. Don't really like the newer ones.

Some people have an affinity for that which is rejected by most society, don't ask me why. But yeah, metal doesn't really hold a lot of value musically.
Some people have an affinity for that which is rejected by most society, don't ask me why. But yeah, metal doesn't really hold a lot of value musically.
Explain to me how metal doesn't hold much musical value compared to other genres.
Metal is an abbreviated form of 'Heavy Metal'.
What was said then was equivalent to saying "Nourishment has different genre's some of them are easy to eat like food".
While this is somewhat true I just want to say that in a lot of metal circles. Heavy Metal tends to be used as a genre. It's used when a band does not have any of the characteristics that define the other sub-genres. It's usually for more basic music, like Accept and some of Judas Priest.
Whether or not you accept that is fine, just thought I'd speak up. : )
It really depends on which metal bands you're talking about. Some hold great meaning. Listen to a couple of disturbed songs, if you can make out the lyrics of "Another Way to Die" you'd realize that David Draiman is yes, talking about death. But in a completely different way that I think you'd be surprised to hear.
I'll let you find out the meaning of the song on your own
To say metal has no musical elements is completely wrong, metal is easily one of the most diverse genres of music there is, try listening to bands like Dream Theater, Nightwish, and you'll see that it has more musical elements than most music. The same goes for bands that have screaming vocals, bands like Lamb of God's lyrics are understandable, it just takes some getting used too( Helps to look up lyrics online). And metal is a pretty dark form of music, people often mistake metal bands to be satanic, when they're only using biblical references to get a point across. Not all music has to be happy, a lot of music focuses on darker subjects.
It's not limited to just screaming; that's just the tip of the iceberg. Metal, like others have said, is a very diverse genre. I've seen it combined with classical music, opera, jazz, and even folk music.
I really think it has no musical elements
This song changes time meter over 100 times. If you're not a musician, you probably wont get what's happening. If you are, you should bring a few pairs of pants. Just in case.
Metal has several musical elements to it. Some more than others. Some genres focus on rhythm and structure, some focus of melody and tonality, some focus on timbre and emotion. It's all up to the musician's taste. I'm not denying that there's metal out there with no real meaning to it, but there is so much more out there than that. The trick is to dig deeper. Trust me, there are several metal bands out there that write beautiful music; and it upsets me whenever people generalize metal to nothing but pointless screaming.
Because heavy metal causes dopamine release in some people. That's the scientific reason anyway. I think that some people incorrectly think of all metal as black metal (ie: really heavy satanic metal) , when it is only a relatively small sub-genre. I personally enjoy alternative-metal, and do not tend to listen to bands that have alot of screaming, but I like the instrumental style and can't say i dont understand the people that do listen to black metal and screamo.
As for the satanic themes in metal, I generally dont listen to bands that have satan as a consistent theme for the same reason i don't listen to christian music, because I find it silly.
Personal taste in music is generally inexplicable.
Well you see, the military needed a way to destroy the minds of their enemies during the Vietnam War, they would blare it out so the Vietnamese would become less aware and their hearing would be damaged, unfortunately, it didn't work. So it got into the hands of the Hippies, who then used it at their protests to fight against the government by using their own mind weapon against them. That's where it came from and why it is so bad, it was meant as a weapon of war. Kind of like heroin in the bullets during world war two.

Metal music doesn't have any... subtlety. It's just thoughtless shredding and screaming.
Possessed doesn't have any subtlety because it's really heavily death influenced thrash metal. It's not supposed to be subtle. It's supposed to kick your ass, which it does a fine job of.
Not all metal is like this though. It's not all "thoughtless shredding and screaming".
"Basically, most people hate "real" metal because it is too complex, you actually have to put some effort and thought into what you are listening to" No, Wrong. that's not the reason people hate it. They hate it because it sounds like ****. (Some i can listen to,but that's mostly old stuff) Maybe the lyrics are not satanic or evil. But the voice and the instruments most sound evil and like they just want to go kill and rape someone! "I don't get why people like hip hop" I don't like hip hop that's all about raping bitches and shooting hoes. But i do like hip hop that has meaning full lyrics, And i can actually understand what the guy is saying. I like most music, even Ambient music. I like freejazz, jazz, hip hop, experimental beats, techno, country, house,D'n'B, dubstep(old, and underground dubstep, skrillex and stuff like that, eww),classical music and just most of the genres out there. But i have never and will never understand most metal. SO this isn't coming from someone with not experience in music , I just can't understand metal.
and if I have to look over lyrics many times to like something, It's not worth it. it's not good.
I notice a lack of genres featuring guitars with anything other than (at most) very mild overdrive. I think you just hate the sound of a distorted guitar, especially considering that you like free jazz, which is similar in many ways to more technical genres.
Or maybe the only "metal" he ever heard was metalcore and nu-metal, which is terrible.

Yea, i'm totally curious.
And saying metal doesn't have musical value is the most narrowminded **** I've ever heard...

Please do research before you form opinions. For the betterment of the human race.
